Hi Will,
She (Daisy 3) is a '98 5 door Disco Tdi 300 EDC auto, with full dealer service history, 76,000mls bought last December in England (RHD) for £2200 !! I thought that was pretty good.

She even has a light in the clock, now, hurrah !!

And now a new Radio/CD and 4 new speakers - I couldn't get the subwoofer to work !!
 
I've got a 300tdi which on a long 60mph run returns 26mpg. It might be the big mud terrains and body lift but even before any of that I was lucky to get over 28mpg. I drive very gently and change up promptly, the EGR is blanked and intercooler cleaned.

A mechanic suggested injectors might need changing as the head gasket went a while ago and they may have been damaged by the heat but I don't get much smoke at all since the head was skimmed, just a little white smoke on a cold morning when setting off.

Any thoughts on what else to try for improving mpg folks?

The big mud tyres could, on their own add 3-4mpg, plus you've lifted the vehicle therefore even worse aerodynamics.

What speed do you cruise at? - anything over 60mph will cripple the fuel consumption.

Can she breath well, new air filter, cleaned intercooler

It wouldn't bother me this type of consumption if I did drive fast, but I really take it easy and reading the entries on this thread about mid to high thirties from the same vehicle makes me wonder if I'm missing something.

Is it manual or auto?

Can't think of anything else to ask, to be honest, everything you're saying should lead to at least 30mpg.
 
Fitted EGR blanking plate to my 96 300tdi manual ( 100,000 miles on clock)this morning then went on a 280 mile trip.Engine definitely seems smoother,more responsive, & seems to pick up the revs quicker. Drive was mix of roads.Used 36 litres of fuel so if my maths is correct it would appear that she"s done 35mpg:)
 
Filled up again last night, 317miles cost me £76.00.

All short journeys since the last fill up [my wife is using the Td5, I'm using our Rover 75 for work and getting 40mpg in rush hour].

Td5 in the shop today; 60k service and EGR to be removed.

What will be will be.

First long run this weekend after EGR blanked ('99 TD5 Auto). In a hurry so wasn't trying to save fuel - up the M1 at 70, country roads in Northumberland, back down to London at 80 then some hectic town driving - 900 miles at 25.29 mpg, which is a couple better than before. Should be about 50% better when I have a bit more leisure and can stick to 60 - will be interesting to see. Running on about 65% Sainsbury's, and 35% bio.

my disco has had a lot done to it before i bought it , a lot i didnt understand this is the part of the add:
1995LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 300 Tdi , new jeremy fearn intercooler, uprated pupm,stage 2 turbo, egr removed,de-catted performance exhaust system,(168bhp) 2" lift suspension with procomp es9000 and special springs,es2000 steering damper goodridge brake pipes, new timing belt and full engine and axle service, limited slip rear differential, also comes with an albe works ali roof rack, new wheels and tyres(275/75/16) all terrains, but went to scotland steady away nothing over 60 but worked out the mpg and my reckoning only 21mpg, roof rack still on how much will i lose with that on ?

AT tyres and suspension lift will increase consumption a bit. Roof rack - depends on the design but expect it to be a BIG drag. And probably exponential - for every mph increase the mpg will go down MORE proportionally, owing to the huge increase in wind resistance.
 
This may seem daft, I'm told even having a window open when doing say 60+ and mud flaps fitted, a nudge bar, or a winch will ALL affect the mpg quite considerably - bearing in mind the Disco, and especially a Defender is about as drag efficient as a BREEZE BLOCK.

Basically I don't think many LR owners expect to get mpg figures much over 30, if they wanted uper 30's (or better) they'd ditch their Landy's and go and buy Smart Cars !!!

The roof rack alone will add 3-4mpg !!! Take it off and do some more trials, tank brim to tank brim.

Ok ok I though it was clear, but.................having a roof rack permanently fitted to a Disco will increase it's consumption of fuel by 3-4mpg by comparison to one without a roof rack.

In other words - TAKE IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR MPG

Is that better?
 
If you take the doors off, pump the tyres up to 50psi, spend £50 on 'super dooper' polish, and apply to yer bonnet . . .

Not to mention free wheel down every hill yer come to . . .

That'll improve yer MPG by ermm . . . . . at least 2mpg !!!

That wasn't just a hint of sarcasm was it??

Today I took of my viscous fan (the Disco TDI300) like I did on the 200, so we'll see what effect that has. It's worked ou really well on my wife's car - all the benefits of Kenlowe at NO COST.

Already did the sooper dooper polish thing - got 0.6 mpg improvement !!
