Assuming you're on std tyres and gearing then it's a matter of achieving an accurate count of the fuel used and then divided into the number of miles.

There's really only one way of ascertaining the amount of fuel used accurately and that is by the brim full to brim full method.

so atm i have 3 quartes of a tank if i fill it to the brim n set the clock but how many litres is a fuel tank on a disco 300tdi??

The fuel tank capacity is irrelevant, what matters is the difference between a full tank and how much it takes to fill it again. That will give you the 'fuel used' part of the calculation.

i think last time it cost around 100 quid n i done jus about 400 miles

With my v8 with MT tyres, boot load and spot lamps galore i got 19MPG on a run

2.5 petrol, MT's = 16mpg

The series 3 I had got me anywhere between 12-18 mpg.

My first discovery (98 tdi, xs), used to hover around 28-32 mpg which I was very happy with.

I've had my current discovery (96, tdi), for about 16 months now, and it's always been a little worse at around 24-27mpg.

However, I decided she was in dire need of service, so I cleaned the fuel sedimenter, changed the fuel and oil filters, topped up the diffs, transfer box, and gearbox oils, changed the air filter, stuck some injector cleaner in the tank, and fitted an EGR blanking kit.
Yesterday I brimmed the tank and took her out for a run to collect some wheels. After 89.7miles, (About 15 miles into the journey back home), I brimmed the tank once more, did my calculations and shes returning 35mpg! I couldn't believe it.

I'd like to decat the exhaust yet and see what effect that has, but I'm very happy with 35.

I was getting 20mpg (if I was lucky) from my 98 300tdi auto - but simply putting a squirt of redex through has improved that to 25/26 - I even get more than 20 towing now!

Also am quite impressed that my old bus with over 170k on the clock can still comfortably hit over 90 (true speed) - and those new mpg figures include a few runs at that so overall average should be even better - well worth a fiver!

I have a 98 disco 1 and have just done a run to Nottingham and back to Cornwall, 350 miles one way, on half a tank, stuck to 60/65 all the way and quite frankly i am as happy as a pig in the proverbial
Just done the egr and decat pipe new oil and new air filter so think i am on around 32/35 to the gallon..

yes it is a manual,, and will be keeping a close eye on fuel,,,,just to be sure..

We drove up to NRM Shildon yesterday with the big trailer and the Ruston engine, 3.5 tonnes loaded. 200 miles all bar a couple, LPG all the way.

10.13mpg on LPG, equivalent to 19.32mpg on a cost basis with petrol at £1.32 a litre.

Just filled up after doing 313m on 46 litres, so that's just over 30 mpg. Bit annoyed as it was as all motorway, cruise control on going no faster than 60mph. Thought I should get at least 35mpg. Any ideas how to improve? Will EGR blanking really make any difference?

Well i did the egr and the de-cat pipe, and i saw a marked improvement.
and for less than £30 outlay for the two,, its a no brainer..

How marked? Don't use the car other than weekends. Is it worth remapping as well?

Also, his easy is it to change the decat pipe? Do you need to have the car raised? Don't know enough yet about what can and can't be done without raising the car

Not sure about re-mapping not looked into it yet, but there is a "how to " on the forum on how to boost some power by tuning the pump,
It is a lot easier to change the pipe if you have it on rams or good axle stands.But care should be taken as some de-cat pipes dont have a "flexi part" and can cause the rear of the exhaust to rattle on the hanger.
But there are far more knowledgeable people than me on here so ask around for best advise.

Well, did a big chunk of motorway driving Thursday. Half a tank so far done 370 miles, so that works out to around 36mph! Really happy with that. Drove really well. Seems to love the open road, even at 64mph!
