I have been looking into "gaylanders" as you guys like to call them. Primarily due to their fuel efficiency compared to other 4x4's.

Out of interest though, what would one typically get from a Diesel 2.5L manual Disco?

Thanks. :)

Re fuel consumption - my wife has a well maintained '93 Disco TDi 200 manual with 160,000mls and we get 35mpg day in day out. On a run over 40mpg. But she is driven gently and on a cruise average 50-60mph.

I have just bought a '98 Disco TDi 300 auto, 76,000mls and I reckon (not done a brim to brim yet) to get on average about 30mpg.

Anything over 60mph and the aerodynamics hit the fuel consumption REALLY hard. Drive them like a 4x4 and you're ok, drive them expecting performance like a car and you'll hammer the mpg. They are not fast cars.

I think I'm gonna have to go with a gaylander then. :D

Shame though. I was parked up in a car park the other day whilst eating my lunch and saw a Disco next to me, looked like a beast compared to my car hehe.

Ive had a 200tdi disco, TD4 hippo and now the td5 110. an i cant honestly say i can tell that much difference between em!
And strange as it may seem the 110's the comfiest fer long distance!

i find that on a run on a free lander i start to feel uncomfortable with the seating positions in them, the last td4 i had in seemed to do worse on fuel than my 200tdi with 185k on the clock.

and mpg nething from 20-40mpg depending on what ur doing

Only done relatively short journeys so far, mostly in busy traffic...

...'52 plate Td5 ES Auto: 23mpg

:)

OUCH!!
Time to invest a fiver in the EGR blanking plate, and up your mpg by at least 10%, meaning about 23 mpg will be way over 25 mpg .... and probably a lot more.
Check the threads for EGR blanking ... TOP TIP!

I have a '04 Disco TD5 manual, very well maintained, done over 95k and regulary get 30+ mpg . . . :) but . . .

I very rarely exceed 3000 rpm, always use the highest gear I can, stick to a steady 60-65 on M ways etc etc.

To be realistic, it still does alot better than the wife's KA, but she does short trips, and I rarely do less than a 50 miler (home to work)

If I want a fast tear about vehicle, personaly I would go and get anything but a 4X4, well . . . maybe a Rangie V8 supercharged if I had loads of dosh to waste.

One point on the 'gaylander' it is horses for courses, in my mind they are not really proper 4X4's (I know, that will upset all the owners) but if you don't intend to venture far off the beaten track, (limited ground clearance, no low range etc) and also want a car may be inherrently troublesome (K series engines head warp problem etc) then get one and enjoy - :D

Me . . well, I stick to my Disco - when that finally gives up, I'll get another, maybe a Series 3 . . superb vehicle and VERY capable

keep up wiv yer service's and on top of repair's :p

ffs ian i wudda thought you did :D

I do, maybe not change the oil as much as I should (about every 10,000miles) apart from that If its broke it gets fixed.

I think I need to clean and set the tubro conpesator, A LOT sluggish of the line below 200rpm, need to stop raining before i can get to do that.

Oh yea I know i will loose a bit with the tyres but not that much surely,

Only did 360 - 400 before the tyre swap.

I would have though 10k miles is ok, my is supposed to be at 12k (acording to LR) but I do it at 10k also (it's easier to remember in 10's)

I also change the gear box/transfer box every 2nd service i.e. at 20k, and the F/R diffs also at 20k, oh, and grease the props and UJ's at every 10k aswell :)

BTW, has anyone got a clever solution to filling the gearbox up, it's a real git to get to ??

(The Mrs moans I love my Disco more than her - and the argument is ???? :D :D

I do an engine oil & filter change every 5000mls on both Discos. I've got all my kit set up so it only takes me about 30 mins a piece. (yes, I know it could be quicker but I prefer to let it REALLY drain out, if you know what I mean).
Also, oil is so cheap here it just makes sense to do it often. eg 5-30 fully synth, 5 ltrs carrefour brand, £12, so buy 3w5 ltrs and it does two changes.

What a muppet I am, I was in France for the New Year, I forgot I could have bought loads of Oil instead of the usual Vino - the wife would think I had really 'gone over the edge' then :D :D

Maybe I'll have to set up an import business, and sell on E-Bay ??
