Hi all just joined, looking to buy a range rover, so thought I would drop by here and get some advice ........ Don't want a diesel, but not sure 4 litre or 4.6 ..... Budget 3-4k there's a few locally within my budget but age and mileage vary quite a lot ...... Not familiar with common faults with these except heard whispers of air suspension issues ! ..... One I will be looking at tomorrow has LPG conversion .... Do they have issues with this mod ?

Welcome any advice

Thanks in anticipation
Terry

See lots of people talk about their rr's as p38, p38a etc ...... Not a clue what mine is lol

All I know is 96 plate 4.6hse !

Welcome to the Loonie Zone. I hope you realise that you've bought a hobby, not a car.

As for models, the original ones, with the round headlights, are known as CLASSICS. Even though they started as 3 doors and finished with a stretched 5 door, the LSE.

Then came yours, the P38 (the Land Rover design number). Apart from engines and trim levels the only real change was in 1999 when BMW took over and changed the electrics a bit.

Then came the L322 chassis with it's circular rear lights.

It's really just a shorthand way of describing your car when you're looking for help or parts.

Cheers, I wanted the hobby part lol one reason for buying ... Same with my lexus, so it's a p38 ..... Sorted !!

So the top of your engine looks rectangular with trumpets underneath. It's known as the GEMS engine. When BMW tweaked it the engine looked as it had grown a bunch of bananas and became known as the THOR with MOTRONICS electronics.

So if (when) you come on here for help you can say that you have a '96 P38 4.6 GEMS and everyone will know exactly what it is.

Will have a proper look when it's on the drive ...... It's having a pd inspection plus new mot ...... 1 owner and only 68k
