Hi all, great site, im new and looking ...

Hi all,

Im currently looking for something to get my teeth into.... Ive had several 4x4`s but never a Landrover... always fancied one, but dont know why.

Anyways, ive just had to let my last 4x4 go (Frontera) as it was un-economical for me to use on day to day traveling, so im now back in a typical 60mpg 5 door hatch (Astra Diesel), with the promise to myself ill get my teeth into a project or bit of fun this summer....

I thaught about getting a VW camper and doing a restoration job... but then thaught.... Why dont I get an old Landrover instead...

Im typically looking for something I could use to Tow, do the trips the the Tip, load up with my fishing gear, and take off roading every now and then.

Id be greatfull for some advice as what to look for, and some help along the way.... Im not shy in taking on a major project as ive restored a couple of old Jaguars, and built several kit cars...

Get a defender or a series 3 and put a 200tdi engine in it. You'll never look back. Oh and welcome to the Loony Zone. hope yer've got a thick skin and a good sense of humour, you're going to need both of them on here.

Hi MA, welcome to LZ!! Yer certainly come to the right place for that, but as to advice, a bit more info would be helpful - do you want comfort, do you have family, do you need boot space or just a cab - if it's just a workhorse, a defender 90 will do, if you do road miles a disco might be better, if you have a family you might need a 110 (LWB defender) - what's your budget?

Anyway, post away and your questions will be answered (not always helpfully or politely, but you'll have seen there's plenty of **** takin and a requirement to be able to have a laff at yerself on ere!)

WOW... a second quick reply.... Dont need comfort, it will be a workhorse, used mainly at weekends, and when its wet (English summer)... Want total rear coverage / loading area.... Im thinking along the lines of a 4x4 van type thing...

Arnt Disco`s for girls????? ;-) Who needs comfort....

So far no budget been set.... or agreed with the boss (her in doors)... so depends how much a can sneek into the kitty i guess..... ill probably take the cheap and chearful route to start with..... Wheres that credit card gone????

Could you tell me how you came to that conclusion? i need to get my head round all these numbers 90`s 110`s..... If you could tell me more, it might help as my calculator needs new batteries....

Then i'd agree, a 110 but try and get a 200TDi if you can, it's a better engine than the TD (or 300) - but you';ll probably be looking 2500+.

Discos are OK, gaylanders are the girly ones (eek) and if you get a CSW (station wagon) you';ll have a row of seats in the back plus enough room to move pretty much anything, they are great rfor towing and can give pretty much anything a run for its mnoney off road.

The REALLY important thing to look for when buying one of them is the condition of the chassis.

90's is the short one and 110's is the long ones due to the numbers being thr length of the wheelbase in inches

reet - a series is likely to be too underpowered and unreliable for a day to day workhorse.
A defender is more "agricultural" than a Discovery, but if you arent worried about comfort and want to use it as a workhorse, then a defender is possibly your best option.
a 110 is longer than a 90 (hence the higher number) and if you get a hardtop, it will be fully covered.

the numbers are the wheelbase in inches (approximately!) - the 200/300 refers to the engine model.
