Hey Vic one thing I meant to ask, what adaptors are you using for these conversions?

Is r380 adaptable or will it simply not handle the torque?

Reason I ask is regards a long term engine upgrade itch that I need to scratch even though I tell myself I must not!

Cannot decide between rover or Chevrolet, weighing up all considerations.

Changing up Chevrolet involves a LOT if change regards ancillaries aswell as the obvious plumbing, exhaust and management.

Noiseman - we will build a manual up to 5 litres - we always use the LT85 with the 10.5 AP racing clutch.

The output shaft wears over time - we make that clear to the client - but the internals are very strong.

Over 5000cc, chevy or rover, we use autos.

We have just ordered a 5.4 litre V8D phantom engine - 335 bhp and 370lbs torque - for a client with a 2-dor RRC

we wanted to fit a stage 2 ZFHP22 or even a Chrysler 727 - but he has insisted on a manual, and we have ordered the mother of all R380's from Ashcroft - but we will not guarantee it.

We told him even the LT95 would be better

We buy our adapter kits from Marks in Australia.

They are great.

If you want a sensible power upgrade consider one of our 4.2's.
We totally rebuild them, port the heads a bit,, and fit a V8D MC1 cam - with an edelbrock 500 we saw massive figures on the dyno at V8D.

I have MS already which in some senses saves me a job as I've already got my head round it, and with that you can make almost any engine run, just not one with variable timing etc

If 4.6 weren't so ****/expensive id be happy enough with that

After all I'm at stock 3.5, id be happy with you know the sort of 250bhp area from a breathed on 4.6 but I don't know if I can trust the buggers...


well....as you know i love the jap v8's. but brb is running 4.6...

if the boost blows it then they are cheap..and if i like it then 500ish gives it top hats, and then its reliable...so,,,

thats not alot really for 5.4.(NOT SLAGIING you or engine off, just not alot compared to some of your stuff..335hp...may i ask why you not fit lt85 and not 380?cos lt85 will take that no problems..

re output shafts of same...do you fit ashcroft oil "catch plate and throw thingys"..sorry cant remember name, but it throws oil on to output shaft..COMPLETLY removes wear of shaft..(5 yrs still perfect)

is the ap a horrible padle ceramic thingy?

Clutch is one down from that - superb piece

5.4 motor and R380 is for a RRC - LT85 not compatible

The 335bhp and 370lbs torque is great for
A rover V8 - client wanted his rest to stay
as true to the original.

The rover is 4k more than our default
motor - Chevy ZZ4 5.7 with Edelbrock top
end - rover makes less power and torque as well - but is
39kg lighter.

We are only doing a rolling chassis for this
His own restorer will put the body on.

customer gets what he wants.

What do they do to get 5.4 from a Rover V8? I've seen 5.0s, 5.2s.. etc where did the squeeze that extra 100 or 200ccs from?

Think I just answered my own question. Is it the 94mm -> 96mm bore that does it and a 96mm stroke?!

Bored and stroked to within a few thou of an inches of its life?

Could you supercharge a 5.4L Rover V8 and make it not blow up? :D
 
are the rear number plate holders black then??i thought they were same as body colour!!

I had to supply whim with a 4.6 donor motor which is top-hatted by them.

All I know is then there is a 6 week lead in time for some parts to come from america.........I suspect he is using a forged crank from another GM engine that he cross-drills and balances himself.

The pistons, rods etc are all top-grade as well - see his website.

The base engine is 6.5 k - he is supplying us with a turnkey job, fully run in etc.

There is an unmachined crank available from a chap on eBay that he says has so much material (it is purpose made) it can be offset ground enough to give a safe 5.5 litre.
 
Hmmm just looked

It's gone

Spoke to the guy a few weeks back about it

Said he recommended a Chevy piston setup and offset grind

Crank was £500 unground

If I had silly money I'd buy one and strip it to see what was inside. Heck if I had that sort of money I'd put one in my RRC. Just because I can say I have a 5.4L Rover V8. Don't care that it doesn't produce a lot of power. :rolleyes: :D

Marc - 330+ bhp and 370lbs tq is quite a lot of power

The Chevy 5.7 ZZ4 - hotrodder's engine of choice - makes 355bhp and 405lbs - it has a hydraulic roller cam which is 10% more efficent than a flat tappet like in the Rover - so the 5.4 isn't doing bad.

remember a standard 5.7 chevy makes only 250 bhp - but it does have good torque - 330lbs out of the box.

So we have a 4.6 block, leyland P76 4.4 crank and some mustang pistons with special rods giving us 5.4 litres, or 5.2 if you go the safer route - I wonder if Mr Eales uses that setup for his 5.2?

I might have a go one day...................

meantime let the nice chaps at V8d get all the glory.

There's another option using a Pontiac crank but I cant find the article.....

However that 5.5 might work for anyone wanting a rover v8 sized lump with lots of power! No doubt you could make a blown one too
