First was my monster 6.3 Litre 90 Overfinch rebuild, then the TVR 4.3 manual manic ' TVR griff with 4WD' car

We have commissions for several cars now - thanks for all the interest.

Half the price of a twisted - twice the fun.

The green one is the 6.3 auto Overfinch dragster - 380 bhp and 450lbs torque.

The grey one the insane 4.3 litre 275 bhp manual TVR-engined beastie.

It is a suffix A 2 door - 1971

Total sheap of hit

originally blue - the owner left it with us - asked us to lift off the body so he could restore the chassis

We told him it wasn't worth restoring as it was too far gone - the previous owner had gone over the whole lower interior panels, rear arches etc with a coating of fibreglass.

we made a jig to keep the body rigid - rolled out the chassis from under, and off he went with it

6 weeks later it comes back and he instructs us to just put the body back on

We told him it needed a complete new body - which we can get - but he lost interest when we told him how much.

So he told us to put the body back on and he would come to get it

That was 6 months ago.

After 5 phone calls requesting he collects it - to no avail - it is now going into the field next to the other scrappers where it will no doubt stay forever.

Nothing is too far gone to repair!

... :(

Suddenly have an urge for a '71 suffix A.

It must be time to move up to a big block by now?

I want to see boundaries being pushed when this much money is going down...

For the record

I appreciate you taking the time to post the pics and info for the benefit of the forum, so thankyou for that :)

It is also some fantastically high standard work that you turn out of that shop so huge credit there too.

I also don't know the situation, I assume you are building these motors for punters as they are all fairly similar and you wouldn't need 3 yourself?! :p

Absolutely nothing wrong with that by the way, but my initial concern was if you are building this motor for yourself, it could be so much more silly.

Another small block 90, even with an aluminium motor, is not all that remarkable and it, and please don't take this wrong, seems like a project with huge potential and financial backing which could be made extremely excellent with some out of box thinking.

Hope you don't mind me thinking out loud...

Didn't griffman already explain some problems with the big blocks?

Of course - even very basic 454 gives monster torque - over 400lbs/ft

Problems though -

1. you cannot get a decent exhaust system down past the LR chassis rails
2. So Heavy - completely ruins the already iffy weight didtribution.
3. so much torque off idle - make 90 face wrong way very quickly in wet.
4. many other things - cooling etc.

that is why the small block 383 is the best-suited to a LR application
with Alloy heads it is only 39kg heavier than a RV8-engined car.

Honestly mate - we have looked at every option over the past 3 years.

But I guess as you said, with so much money going in, those problems shouldn't be a concern!

Granted it's a massive bastard to go BBC, and if these are builds for customers then I fully understand and frankly would recommend SBC to anyone looking for a good all round vehicle

But

If these are being built for fun or "cos we can" then it deserves more

I wouldn't expect anyone to put an LS in there if looking for the classic Chevy sound and feel, and billet blocks are coin.com

I dunno

Guess it's just a bit *sigh*

More background required from griff I think.

Guys

I must emphasise that we don't build these cars to make money per se - believe it or not the workshop gets paid labour plus any parts/sundries etc that are used, and the client pays for the main bits.

The concept, planning etc is all done in conjuction with the client - I find a suitable donor car and make a small commission on that. I also get repaid any costs I incur.

It really is done for the love of V8 defenders.

After this black hot rod one we will do our first 110 - a 4.3 auto - in red.

We have used the 50th Anniversay as our base - the general belief is that it was the best defender made - V8 auto - and we are trying to build and improve on that concept.

It is a good concept.

We try to use original factory V8 cars if possible.

We don't want mad stuff - why?

Because the compact V8 - chevy or rover - is in keeping with the concept.

We have a formula which we know works well.

The client then decides how he wants that formula best interpreted.

The black 90 will be quite spectacular - as you can see by the Khan wheels, whereas the 110 up next will be understated but fast smooth and comfortable.

I hope this answers some questions about WHY.

The HOW is the fun bit!!!!!

^^^^ thanks mate

That's what I wanted to hear really I guess

Thanks for sharing :)

Noiseman

you and all the regulars on here are always very very welcome to come down to Sussex to see us and get a handle on what we do.

You will be made to feel at home, fed bacon butties and nice coffee, maybe asked to pass a spanner or two, have a browse around the breakers and spares cars to see if there is anything of use.

If you want to come on the train we will even collect you and drop you back at the station - 50 mins from Victoria.

have a great weekend all.

How come a 6.3 litre v8 only makes 380 bhp, sounds kind of low to me?
Have to add I would love 380bhp!
