Hello

Td5 is smoking (white smoke) as soon as you start it and only running on 4 maybe even 3 cylinders.

It started making a funny induction noise i'm guessing around about the air filter box area when giving it full throttle it then got louder and louder followed by the smoke and not firing on all 5

I left it over night and as soon as you start it it smokes and running incredibly lumpy. The turbo doesn't sound like its spooling up either.

Any suggestions please

I've got a photo but can't see how to insert it

Cheers

White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include

Faulty or damaged injectors. Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway). Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)
When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing.

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame.

Dont be too impressed :D:D I looked up smoking when my engine was doing it the other day

Head gasket was replaced with a turners one 6 months ago. Not having much luck with it just now. Pas pump went then fuel filter housing followed by fuel pump and finally water pump. Oh and now this ha ha.

How do I check injectors?

Well you certainly dont ask me :eek:

I was just being helpful and pasting what I found the other day. I dont really know what it means, but it doesn't sound good.

On the plus side, loads of folk who probably do know what they are talking about are reading this now :D:D

Check your turbo is ok.. no looseness in the fan etc.
Also check the intercooler pipes havn't collapsed (DE GLAZED) inside.
I had loss of power and white smoke the other day. Turned out the intercooler pipe was perished inside and collapsing in with the turbo pressure, causing it to lose power and run very roughly.
Pipe is a cheap fix, so worth just checking these 2 things to rule out first i reckon.

Just had a proper look and the turbo is in bits. All the fins are off and you can move it all over the place.

Any suggestions when the best(cheapest) place to buy one is?

What makes are available and what are the ones to avoid?

Oh or is this an opportunity to fit a larger one??

I'd go for a re con or new one rather than used.
Also check out the pipes though, as must be a reason for it giving out and might be a poor pipe, blockage etc.

Ebay is the usual place to look for turbo, although must be some better places that i'm sure will be suggested shortly.

Garrett seems to be the turbo to look for.

is the turbo damaged on the inlet or exhaust side? and can you account for all the bits that are missing? to be honest I'd whip the head off to make sure your not going to do major damage on restarting..

Cheers Steve

Hi,
Replaced my turbo about a year ago, got a brand new Garrett from Turbo Dynamics LTD in Christchurch Dorset for £400 inc VAT. Best price I could find, they had one in stock and checked the old one out for me, sounds like you won't need them to check it though. Seemed a good bunch.
Good luck...Mike.
