I'm struggling with drilling the required 36mm holes in my Mantec winch bumper!! I've tried a hole saw which made a circular mark but wasn't man enough to go through. I bought a cone cutter but it's not big enough and I've been advised against trying it.

Basically I'm after giving someone local some beer vouchers if they have the right tool and are able to drill two holes in the flat face of my bumper for me either side of the winch. One side already has a small pilot hole and a circular scratch.

I'm just south of Leighton Buzzard, but would be happy to travel 15-20 miles or so if anyone can help?

I hate those recovery swivel eyes the lip is so small can't be rated very high I know they say its 2 tonnes but thats when used with the machined holder which is almost 20mm thick.

As an official in a comp run to msa Arc regs about 3 years ago I refused and made a point of other officials not to tow the stuck 90 with the above fitting. The driver was shocked as he fitted it himself. Not too well it looked hidious. he used a hole saw but it wasn not donw well. We dragged him out backwards and made him fit a jate ring or stop competing. Myself and the other marshalls had a word with the scruteneer aswell. Next meeting there was a rough looking hole where it used to be and although he wouldn't admit it we think it ripped out at a P&P or Greenlane somwhere. and he ended up with a trusty jate ring.

Each to their own tho.

We reckon the hole saw or cutter moved when he drilled it and thinned the metal out. It should have been backed with a 10mm plate with a 50mmx75mm plate and the same or thicvker on the front then it may have been ok.

I Can be!

I had a tyro driver 14yo passengering with me as they could not drive inbetween sections. his first time out so didn't want anything to cock up plus there was a roumour that there was some officials coming to watch the event.

The event wasn't even a begginner one it was CCV/RTV mix so the potential of a standish 90 getting propper stuck was likley up against a course laid out for 80 inch hybrids.

I have seen a cheapo jaw ripped off and go through the back of a motor.

All because of a rusty x member. Luckily nobody was hurt but the tow vehicle was destroyed rear window, Hardto side passenger head rest (god knows if anyone would have survived if they were sitting there. front screen and was a nylon rope not even kenetic.

Hoping 4 or 5 mm wide ring around a 36mm pin and 3 or 6mm bit of bumper is strong enough is beyond me.

Its often easy to tell a real comp motor built for serious stuff and a blinged up bull**** one anywhere. Plenty of "challenge trucks" with towing drop plates:doh:

Nuff said from me. Good luck with your swivel bollix it looks Grand!!!

Thanks Mad Hat Man, much appreciated. Just had a look on Ebay (out of interest) at Trepanning and there is a manual set (obviously old and very rare) for £20,000!!!!! Looked like a US listing.

I may strip the winch and bumper off and get a local engineering co to deal with it for me.

It's too far for you to come here but I could drill the holes and make you some good big
f--k off spreader plates for the back. Beer tokens gladly accepted!

Loads of engineering firms around Tring Berkhampsted that could do it for you.

I can drill the hole and plate as offered above for beer tokens but IMHO its not worth doing and time at the moment is going MAD! I managed to smooth off and repaint 1/3 of my roll cage this afternoon and remove the remailns of a stud extractor while making the thread good again.

Tomorrow its Picking up LR parts Stevenage possibly, and doing the rest of the cage after work.

I have a huge list of stuff to get done and MHM your on my list but time latley is mad.

Failing paying somone else to fit it Why don't you buy propper swivel ones.

Forgetec4x4 makers of steering guards, sump guards, jackable sills & ground anchors

Just an idea?
£40 ish

Just had a look at their site. To be fair that's not a bad shout as I can easily drill 4 manageable holes myself as opposed to the one huge hole that I'm trying to find a solution to.

Sadly my OEM winch bumper (Mantec) and random steering guard combo meant that I had to remove my Jate Rings otherwise I'd still be using them for all the reasons mentioned above.

I got bored of finding my steering wheel off centre due to a bent rod but didn't appreciate the Jate Ring conflict until I offered up the steering guard. I should have spent the money on an uprated steering arm!
