Hi all, well defenders dead as many of you know but no idea whats up with it. We lost drive on the way back from frickley so today I started to look at it thinking maybe a half shaft? so i jacked one side up and spun the drivers side wheel with i believe shouldnt ? so then i jacked other side up and the wheel neally fell of:eek: its like its got a seriousley fooked bearing so not sure what that will be if any one can help me on that one
then i jacked the full front up spun one wheel and the other did nothing:confused: so i think it may have snaped a half shaft:confused:
and looked at the transfer box and the front prop is spining when in gear and rear one is doing nothing
i turned engine of and the front prop i can turn it by hand the rear one wont move at all even tho the hand brake is of

can any one help on all my probs cheers

If I have read that all correctly then it all sounds fine to me and yes you have a fooked halfshaft.

If you spin a prop shaft, the other one will not spin unless diff lock is engaged, thats why there is a diff lock to allow drive to be sent equally to front and back and so help you if you loose traction on the front of back axle.

So if you spin the one you suspect has a fooked halfshaft, with its opposite on the ground and there is no prop movment then you need a new HS.

Will it drive with the diff lock engaged?

If I've understood you correctly it sounds as if you have two problems, a very knackered wheel bearing at the back, and something broken at the front, probabaly half shaft or CV joint. Take the drive member off first and check the condition of the splines, it's not unknown for the to wear.

hi mate no it wont drive in any gear could the swivel boint broke on the front or wil it be the bearing cheers

Just to confirm you know what the difflock does? It locks the front and rear props together. It is NOT a gear and is selected by moving the hi/low transfer lever to the left hand side. Hi and low can be worked with the difflock disengaged (move lever to the right hand side) and engaged (move lever to left) The gear selector is H shaped and NOT a straight forward and back motion. Sorry if you already know this but from the way you are describing what you are doing it makes it sound like you don't realise this.

I have got exactly the same issue. CVs have been banging for a while, the day before I book it in I lost drive, ONLY drives with diff lock on.

I am hoping its JUST CVs but who knows!!>? I've booked it in with good local mechanic as I have neither both time or space to work on it myself.....hope its not too expensive!!!
