Hey hey,

Bit of a problem with my Disco 1 folks - hopefully nothing too major but you guys will know better than me.

On full steering lock there is a horrendous grinding noise.

The car seems to have a limited turning circle, and sometimes it feels as though both wheels aren't pulling as much in the same direction as they should.

There is a fainter grinding noise when cornering whilst driving.

There is oil leaking from around the wheel bearing on the front passenger side. I'm not sure if it's coming from the bearing or from something connected around that area.

Total mechanic n00b - so please no technical terms! I can have a look if you guys want anymore info, but will need some severe hand-holding!

Thanks in advance for any help,

Alec.

^^^^^^^ what robint said + u'll also see the CVjoints condition as well cause u'll have to replace the rubber seals beneath them to stop the leaking.

im in the process of replacing my CV joints, bet you any money yours will have gone, when they collapse you will lose drive to the front so get them changed before they go all together
its a ball ache to change them, i waited too long and have to replace all of the bearings, seals and the big chrome ball around the CV. All because i waited too long when the seals had gone so the mud and water got in and destroyed the CV

check your steering stops ( what size tyres you running ) and check your wheel bearings

oh and put your location up so peeps may well be able to help ya !!

Steering stops... Might as well be in swahili! But the car is running standard size tyres - I believe they are 245/70/R16.

Hmm, ok so - if it is the CV joints, and I change them before they finally go...

Will a "normal" mechanic know what he is doing, or is this something specific to Land Rover's?

Will it be a lengthy/expensive job - how much can I expect to pay to have it done?

Are there any preventative measures that I can take until I get it booked in somewhere?

Is there any way this could be linked to the car's refusal to go into Diff Lock - or is that a different problem altogether?

I'm in Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway by the way, if anyone is local and wants to have a look...

Will it be a lengthy/expensive job - how much can I expect to pay to have it done? will depend on how much if any damage has been done

Is there any way this could be linked to the car's refusal to go into Diff Lock - or is that a different problem altogether? Nope diff lock will lock your centre diff so 2 wheels are always working. Chances are it has not been used and gone stiff. Have a search and you will find the different ways of freeing it.

Answers in red :)

Thanks for all of the help and information guys.

I've called my local Landy spares shop and they have recommended a good/cheap mechanic to take it to. Having a bit of bother getting him on the phone, but hopefully when I do he knows his stuff...

Been out tinkering today - fixed the broken electric window switches in the centre console - so proud of myself!! :p. My next job was going to be tightening up the nut on the rear window wiper but I can't get to it for the spare. I'd remove the spare, but the previous owner doesn't seem to have left me any of the tools for the wheels (checked under bonnet and under rear seats - no sign of 'em :(). None of my wheel wrenches fit so I guess it's eBay time..

Then I just gotta fix the diff lock, put in a head unit which doesn't jump every three seconds, and then it's time to start shopping for big meaty tyres..

Thanks again guys :)

Well, for anyone who is interested...

Took it to the garage and the diagnosis is that the "hub bearings" need to be replaced. The mechanic jacked it up, grabbed the wheel by the top and bottom and could easily rock it back and forth. He seemed fairly certain that this was the source of the problem and didn't really look any further (hoping he doesn't find more wrong with it when it goes for repair).

Taking it back on monday - he reckons about £40 for parts and £60 for labour.

if its just the main wheel bearings (pair) get them yourself along with a replacement drive flange gasket and do it yourself, its easy if you buy a hub nut spanner and do it yourself, and i recon the parts will be about half what the garage say
