Hi,

I have a Freelander 2 SE TD4 which is coming up to 10K miles. After a propshaft replacement at around 2500 miles, our current problem is a persistent "hot oil" smell. The car has been into the local dealership with this twice now and has spent around 9 days in total with them. The first time they diagnosed a coolant leak (non-specific) and a leaking rear main oil seal. The second time they diagnosed a further oil leak ("from the engine" - all I know). Unfortunately it still stinks - I had to spend about an hour in the car on Saturday night and ended up with a chronic headache and feeling sick.

This isn't apparent so much at start-up (so not the fuel preheater or whatever it's called) but is especially bad when coming to rest after hard driving. I'm watching the engine oil level and that seems to be fairly static - if anything it is overfull.

Any technical suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have this car on contract hire through my ltd co. I'm keeping the lease firm up to speed on the dealer visits etc - but my next option surely has to be to raise the issues directly with them and demand either remediation, replacement or termination?

Cheers,
Gareth

Also, is there has been previous oil leaks check that there is no waste oil on the outside of the engine that is getting burnt off when the engine is up to temperature. Dealer should have done this and cleaned it up but we all know what dealers are like...

Cheers

any spilt oil on the engine should have burnt off by now, and you would notice the smell gradually improving (getting less strong)

Thats not good, is this going to be the shape of things to come on FL2?

Get down to the dealership and shout a lot.

I was picking up the FL1 in my dealers when a Merkin was giving off steam in front of all the customers.

He was complaining about a cracked indicator lens, he said it wasnt broke when the vehicle was left in for a service. The dealers fitted one there and then just to get rid of him.

So shout a lot, until you are happy with the repair.

Failing that name and shame them.

Hope you get sorted

Have you tried google search, as I remember reading about this problem before but was a while back. Have a quick check.

There is a recall/bulliten on FL2 for the transfer box breather to be replaced as they can throw oil out, take it to a decent dealer and get them to check if the recall has been done.
