Hello guys,

my name is Daniel, i´m an automotive engineer and i´m working on the disassembly of Siemens MS4x ecu (mainly for BMW engines, so please be gentle if i don´t know any aspect of the Freelander engine).
We have had great success in the last month understanding how the engine controller works and how to modify it. We are even able to implement our own code, so things like map switching etc are now in development :)

One thing i´m currently stuck at is identifying how the KV6 (FL2) works without an idlespeed actuator.
From what i have found searching the web for several hours and digging through the code for several hundred hours, the MS43 at the FL2 uses throttle opening for slow idlespeed modification and ignition advance for fast idlespeed actuation.

Problem is, when i unplug the ISA at my BMW engine and modify the program like it is used at FL2, the engine stalls immediately after the start due to closed throttle. Now, the funny stuff is, i modded to code to replicate the behaviour of the Freelander, unfortunally without majour success...

Would anyone of you fellow guys with an FL2 KV6 be able to take a video of the throttle actuation at engine start? I know its a bit of work to unmount the intake air filter and set up a camera/smartphone, but it would help the community by a majour degree!

Thanks alot
Daniel

This post will be aimed at the US spec Freelander 1 KV6 owner.
All UK / EU spec engines use the Siemens S2000 ECU. The S2000 system does use a separate Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) to control engine idle speed in combination with ignition advance/ retard speed control.
Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the answers.

If a 2005 Freelander is just a facelift and not a Freelander 2, then yes i mean a Freelander 1.

Early 2.5 V6 uses Siemens MS42 and the later 2.5 V6 uses MS43 from what i could find on the internet. The first one is really interesting as it seems to have MAP sensor, rather then MAF sensor (which i´m really curious about!) and the nice aspect about no ISA/ICV i already mentioned.

Here´s a description of the engine i´m talking about:

Freelander never used MS42

Only Siemens EMS2000 and MS43 for NAS spec only

So to understand correctly you unplugged the ISA on the BMW engine and tried the Freelander specific software for MS43 but the engine won't run? Maybe the default on the BMW ISA when unplugged is closed and it stops any air going in

I´m pretty confident it uses MS42 ;)

Yes, i unplug ISA at the BMW engine and it stalls due to closed throttle (min throttle opening is 0° for both cases!), if i set it to ~2.6° the engine runs, not perfectly but it runs. So for MS43, there must be something in the code which automatically adjusts the throttle opening during idlespeed. Thats why i´d really love to see the throttle in action during an engine start.

It should be open at ~5-6° before the engine starts and depending on coolant temp it should open up to 25° in very cold ambient. The interesting part is what its doing after that...

Whats do you mean by NAS?

The KV6 doesn't need a MAF sensor. The ECU uses the MAP, TP, CT, O2 sensor signals along with Rpm to calculate ignition and fuelling requirements.

I know the S2000 equipped KV6 uses IACV and ignition swing to alter the idle speed. I can't see why ignition swing isn't also used on the NAS market versions.
NAS = North American Spec ;)

Hello guys,

just a short update, we fixed it :) MS43 is now working without the ISA/ICV.

Well if you need some hand on info, I have a NAS Freelander 1 KV6 which uses the MS43 (and it is a drive by wire) and the NAS version of the V6 Freelander uses a MAF not a MAP. (For those that want to look it up, the part number is MHK100620 )
