Live in a muddy rural area but not a farmer. Do very few miles, have two small kids, hate keeping cars clean and am prone to prangs which I'm usually to tight/skint to get repaired. My old saloon has just died and I don't want to spend more than about 3-4k tops. Was thinking that a Landy Defender might suit my incredibly lazy and slightly disrespectful attitude towards cars. Reviews seem to warn me off re: economy, reliability, safety, purchase price and - well - pretty much everything really unless I'm off-roading (which I probably won't be). But I'm still interested! Should I be?

Any views? Particularly keen to hear from "lasses" with young children.

A lazy, careless owner with a £3k 90/110 (won't be a Defender at that money) will be heading for complete disaster in a short amount of time. Buy a Kia.

If you have kids and there in a booster seat you will really need the 110 station wagon to keep legal, Great toys had one when my son was still in his baby seat, I still miss even although i have a lovely 90. But my son can only legally sit in the front in his boster seat while the wife is in the back. A 3-4 K spend you better be good with your hands and have a good mechanical knowledge or willing to learn quickly,

As for reliability mine has never not got me home, as for safety i have been in a serious bash with it and we all walked outta it. A disco might be more what your looking for, spacious, more comfortable and better seats and is still capable of going most places a 110 will.

Condition of 110CSW vary so you have gotta get a good one or you will spend a fortune fixing it especially the B posts

Personally i would test drive a 110CSW and a disco and see what suits your needs the best and what you prefer the look of , personally i like defenders.

No land rover at that price bracket will be suitable if you're lazy and mechanically unsympathetic. They need looking after and more routine maintenance than ordinary cars. You should steer clear in my opinion.

As have I. Just bought my first defender, and your budget would involve something needing a little TLC, especially if you wanted something like a Station Wagon which would be best with kids in tow.

That was what worried me more...
If you can't control a small car, you'll kill some poor bugger piloting a 2 Ton tractor.

Disco would be a better bet - 2.5-3k would buy you a mint D1!

I would have to agree with the general thrust of the replies to this topic.

Landrovers dont like " lazy " owners, ( apart from lazy owners with lots of money to take it to a main dealer to be fixed/serviced ).

As much as I love Defenders, a Discovery is more suited to my " rural " situation with 2 small children, and you get more for your money with a Disco as Defenders are awesome at holding thier money !.

You have to " love " landys really.

Del.

dont think the maintenance issue is a big deal for a lightly used road vehicle..... its when you thrash it off road that preventative rebuilding/major failures becomes an issue.

I could class myself as abit of the same when it comes to bumps n scrapes in my Landy, they don't bother me and as such i have dings all over the place, however maintenace for running etc is a full on thing. Most nights & weekends spent doing stuff to her ( the Landy not the wife, although....) and it becomes a hobby which you either will enjoy or hate.

If your happy to care for the bits that matter in a 90/110 Defender then go for it, otherwise consider a Disco.
