Day 14 of holiday - this time the front prop shaft does bang bang bang

Lucky we were just pulling away, as I had stopped on a narrow passing place on a Cornish road waithing for oncoming traffic to pass.

BTW Has anyone lost one at speed ??

Attachment 1 = stuck in a lane
Attachment 2 = knackered prop shaft that goes bang bang bang when the wheels go around, can you see the damage?
Attachment 3, 4 & 5 = fooked

Is there anything else I need to consider to look at after the prop shaft is replaced?

So I was stuck in a narrow lane with just enough room for cars to pass by.

I had left all my spanners and socket sets back in the caravan too, I was going to unbolt the front UJ and limp away.

Got very fortunate as a bloke walked out of a house, my wife called him & he was a land rover mechanic, and had spanners too.

He and a mate of his (who just seemed to turn up from nowhere) removed the prop shaft and then towed me 200m up the road to a grass verge where the 90 was not obstructing the road.

The recovery van arrived about two hours after the call, and they had a 20 mile tow limit, unless I was willing to pay. Which implied their "local" garage. My preference would have been a tow to a land rover specialist.

So I got the 90 to a place about 6 miles away, left it for monday (when they open).

Trying to sort a hire car out.

Hope to get it fixed before we are due to set off home.

From the look of it, it's just the UJ that's gone. No need for a new propshaft and shouldn't take long to replace provided you have a few normal tools. Bit worried that a Land rover mechanic didn't suggest that and also that you could take the prop off, put it in difflock and drive it to the local garage with rear wheel drive.

That is what I was trying to do, however ....

Could not engage diff lock at all, once the transmission went out of high, it would not apparently do anything at all, could not engage high, low, diff lock or no lock.

The stick was moveable and seemed to make the right noises but I had no drive to the rear prop shaft at all.

Funny, the front UJ was rotating as if trying to deliver power.

Recovery driver confirmed same and was talking about no load ??

Me, I'll stick to electrics in the mean time, untill I get more experience.

you dont need to move out of hi or lo to engage diff lock ,obviously needs adjustment or something as lock wasnt been moved enough to engage

Pair of the wife's tights and some string would have sorted that right out, no problem.

as long as your wife also does the bang bang bang, I dont think this is a serious problem. A few spanners, best friends (hammer and breaker bar), and about 30min under the car

I am just outside Looe.

The 90 is in Liskeard in a lock up yard, courtesy the recovery man.

Did you not get any prior warning? Such as clunking on take up or vibration at particular speeds? Had you just come off a long high speed run?

if you have 13mm spanner put it into dif lock using spanner on nut on front out put housing on transfer box

No warning that I was aware of, we had done about 130 miles yesterday, a lot of that was on main roads about 50 to 60, topps on 65.

I just (last week) developed a steering shake at about 45 to 50 that I put down to needing the wheels ballanced and rotated.

When the prop shaft fellout of the UJ I had been stationary and was just pulling away.

I will need to wait and see what the garage says on Monday. Just as long as they do not charge stealer prices.

For me I think its more how to source & get delivered parts when away from home.

I have enough spanners and socket sets here & a torque wench, no ramps, but then if it only replacing a prop then all I'll need is a mat for comfort and a couple of 14mm spanners - surely.

Which Garage is it at?
And it's 9/16" spanners you'll need.
I'll PM you my number.
I can pick you up a prop and drop it over on Monday if it will help (providing Tamar 4x4 have got one in stock, which I'd expect they would).

Right, went to the Boconnoc Steam Fair today and bumped into the geezer from Tamar 4x4. He said he's 90% sure he's got a prop on the shelf, if not he can get one delivered tomorrow afternoon.
My Son works at Barbican MOTs in Looe and can fit it for you.
So, there's options if Wesward Recovery want silly money.
