Fink I found the cutting problem and posted pic's etc into Ming's original fred.
There is a small vertical rib inside the valve housing on some TD4's that does not line up with the small cut out in the web of the venturi plate of the BMW part.
There is not a lot of clearance around the web when installed.
Others checked and found theirs lined up but others did not like mine! Seems to depend on when the castings were made?
If you do have a misalignment then as you screw the top down it pushes the venturi plate to one side and it's possible it will become dislodged and fall off the rubber seal that holds it onto the top.
It won't work too well like that.
If it all fits then you are ok - if the small cut out and rib don't align then it may fall off.

Was all written up in Ming's (I mean Porky's) excellent fred.

Hope it helps??
I could not put it any better ! :)

Hi
New to this, but finding it very useful
Can somebody give me the part numbers and prices of the two modifying kits?
Also where it is best to get them from

crankcase breather .. bmw call it an 'Oil Separator'
BMW Part Nr: B11.12.7.799.367 Oil Separator
buy it from a bmw parts supplier .. bmw dealership or off the internet ..
price be £23 aprox.

Can someone advise , the small breather filter on end of tube down back of engine , mine has been taken off and turned round , there's an arrow on the filter , should this ARROW point Into engine or point to the ground .
And other end which just hangs down towards the ground have any tube on it at all ,
Thanks.

the turbo vac. solenoid in-line type filter ?
arrow in towards the hose that leads to the vac. solenoid
( as it's sucking air in ) although it would probably 'filter' either way round ?
other end of the filter remains open to the atmosphere

arrow on the filter goes into the pipe and nothing should be connected to the other end of the filter , it hangs down the back of the engine

GOT A MISFIRE NOW AFTER Fitting the wee filter down back of engine and fitted new map sensor along with the air intake sensor just behind dipstick , I also decided to fit the upgrade crankcase filter doing away with old foam one.
Found it bit tricky to push on but seemed OK , put all back together now I have a misfire and smoke at 2500 rpm but comes ok when revved on up , , if I plug any sensors off while engine is running it makes little or no difference .
Pulled plug if off the Maf made no difference maybe bit extra smoke .
Would it be possible the new type crankcase filter is not seated correct and if so would a misfire be a symptom
Of this. Thanks. Can Maf be cleaned on engine I can't get anything to fit to take screws out of Maf sensor.

more like something you disturbed fitting it like an injector connector

Ok thanks I will strip back and check again , I see in some posts they had to cut there upgraded filter to get it to fit in housing , I found mine a bit hard to fit but seemed OK , or does it need cut to fit correctly.

Late last night stripped it all down again checked everything , even tried old filter back in and you off egr by pass but just the same , so put new mod filter back in , and refitted the egr by pass check all plugs etc , pulled off injector
Plugs all seemed fine . So all built back up and still misfire around 2500 rpm , thinking its Maf but have no tool to take the Maf sensor out ,
Is them silicone hoses really worth changing.

Changing the filter on the crankcase breather is one thing, but not cleaning, checking functionality of the valve within the same component would mean a waste of time fitting the 'new' upgrade. it's not just the oil seperator that needs doing...valve too. Also, be aware that 'NON service' items on cars....AREN'T!!

The TD4 can suffer a misfire with smoke if the revs are held at 2K. It's a common problem which also affects my TD4. I just ignore it tbh.

Don't under stand , the red rubber valve was cleaned and check to the point where as far s possible as in putting air in caused the rubber to close the spring allowing air through into other chamber.
As for non service items such as inlet manifold , sensors etc I think cleaning is always a option before replacing

Yep, thats what I did with mine....it was very dirty and I am repalcing it shortly..

Can you buy it on its own. Don't know proper name for it. Lol

Not sure TBH my crankcase breather housing had been abused by a previous owner, who had fitter the 'upgrade' so I have bought a new one..think the valve assembly is included(well, I hope it is!!)(just checked the supplier it IS included)...The part used didn't have any markings on it. I had ordered one anyway and was abit surprised to see the upgrade already done but should have guessed as the allan screw heads on the cover were completely destroyed. I am a bit sceptical that the seperator works as described and changing the PCV filter yearly or every 12000 miles would do just as good a job. Still, I fitted my own upgrade9that had a art number etc on it) and temporarily put it all back together..
