my 3.5 V8 is doing 10MPG is this right, only just picked it up so dont understand whether thi sis normal. Ive owned a 4.0 injection V8 and i got at least 18MPG from it so would expect it to be close to that. RPi say I shoud get about 18 - 20.

can anybody help me diagnose what is wrong, cam? carbs? timing?

cheers fellas......and gals!

Lead foot disease ????

Could be a multitude of things.
Start with the basics.
Plugs, leads, filters, oils, tyre pressures, etc.
Then carb balance, ignition timing, compression test, cooling, etc.
Lastly could be brakes binding, clutch slip, restricted exhaust.

There's some for you to be going on with.

give it a full service first seeing as youve just got it.That should cover most of these things^^^^

No it isn't.
You'd have to be very heavy footed to get that, so must be something wrong

I get 16mpg from my V8 90 auto so I reckon yours probably needs a good service. Make sure you replace the plugs, there was only half of the side electrode left on 3 of the plugs from mine when I bought it. It was running pretty rough but has been fine since the service.

i used to have a v8 90 ! the best thing i ever did with it was to fit a disco transfer box ! :)
I've just done this (1.4 to 1.22) but not run it yet, what sort of mileage are you getting?
Was doing about not a lot. Was getting 90 odd miles on 25 quids worth of gas if driven very very carefully.:(

I was getting 8.6 mpg on LPG and 11mpg petrol, just changed thermostat as it was stuck open so never got a chance to run at normal temperature, I'll report back when tested. I'll be happy if I get 15-16mpg round town on petrol and 13-14mpg on LPG

Mine improved a lot when I fixed my thermostat, even with the low box. You should be getting 20 on the motorway if you keep it down to 60ish, slight uphills will best be tackled in 4th for economy even though revs are higher the throttle should be lighter, be intersted to see how it goes:)

Will report back, it has an auto box which doesn't help, but it does have very long gears (120mph easy) so I'm guessing the transfer box has been changed to a Range Rover or possibly disco one? Also it's a 4.6 too, I'd love to get 20mpg

i have now changed the plugs and it sounds like it is running rougher than when the old ones were in - is this right? I live in Andover Hampshire, if anyone knows of anyone who can do a compression test, and timing check up nearby it would be appreciated. The chap I use is sadly not well and cant really commit to a time.....

Incedentally I put in some new WIPAC'S to replace the sealed lights and after ****ing off a few people with my wiring deficiencies I corrected it and they are a million x better than the originals.

Has anyone fitted a weber/edelbrook carb set up??

cheers

Got em on mine, :bounce: very nice.
Apparently my landy was sent to JE Engineering from the factory to have some tuning and an auto box fitted. I don't have any paperwork on it but it seems to be likely because the original owner was the drummer from The Cure. :drum:
