Hi all,
Got a problem with my TD5 starting in the mornings...
Done the head gasket 700 miles ago and thought this was the reason it was a bit of a pain starting in the mornings from cold.
Also fitted new injector seals.
Have to pump the pedal in the mornings to get it started..Also fitted new glow plugs.
Any help will, as always, be appreciated...:cool::cool::cool:

Its been a bit of a problem to start in the mornings since i bought it last year.

Its just i have to pump the pedal 3 times in the morning then hold it at half throttle till it fires up...Not too much of a problem really, just an annoying one.:confused:

After the first initial start in the morning its fine...Starts on the button with no throttle...As it should.
 
Have you tried a decent battery on it? I had similar with mine, apparently unless the battery is perfect TD5s can be bad starters first thing. I pooh poohed it at first until I put a new battery on mine. My old one (which I thought was ok) was obviously not good enough. See if you can borrow one first though to save you buying one if it isn't that!

Just a thought,,, I have,nt tightened down the injector clamp bolts since doing the H/G....Plus the valve clearences are slightly out...You can hear one or two of then knocking slightly and its like the timing is fractionaly out...Would/Could this be my starting problems mate.???:confused::confused::confused:

Possibly. That is what I was thinking when I asked how long its been doing it for.

Valve clearances are on hydraulic lifters so it wont be them tapping unless you have a doggy lifter.

Injector clearances are set via the tappets on the rocker shaft so if one of the injectors is loose or not seated properly it can tap and cause timing issues.

In the mornig, after about 1-2 minutes of waiting for Diesel to get to candles, it takes me about 2-4 attempts before I finally get engine to start and unleash a hell of a smoke cloud. Defender runs fine rest of the day with no further problems when starting engine. Defender at local European car shop for past 4 weeks and they still have no clue what it may be (They thought it was sensor or bad quality Diesel).
Any leads or further insights?
 
Valve clearances are on hydraulic lifters so it wont be them tapping unless you have a doggy lifter.

Injector clearances are set via the tappets on the rocker shaft so if one of the injectors is loose or not seated properly it can tap and cause timing issues.

Or the clearances are wrong on one or two maybe?? Yes??

Mine started off like that and it turned out it was the head gasket that had failed...
 
Adjusted the valve clearences and my motor is spot on...Turned out i'd got the clearences wrong by at least 3 quarters of a turn on three valves.:):):):):)

Hi, had exactly the same problem with mine - you have probably tried this but changed the relay and now it starts on the button every time - better than when I bought it...

You must mean the five injector rocker clearances (should be backed off one whole turn from bottomed out) as the valve clearances on the TD5 are not adjustable. Any slack is automatically taken up by the hydraulic valve lifters.
 
IMO if it starts hard only in the morning it might not be a timing issue...cos this would disturb it all the time... i'd go for the air bleed valve first of all, cos it's cheap and easy to fit... and it gives difficult cold start symptoms

Exactly ! Fuel is draining back over night and needs to re-prime the fuel system before it will run. Once primed it takes some time to drain hence it starts easily throughout the day.
