Hello All,

Thank you for allowing me to post on your useful forums!

I am trying to help my mother on deciding a Land Rover model. My mother has driven sports cars all her life, but recently moved to a rural location. This doesn’t play well with Porsches! We work in care and need to get our carers to our clients (even in 2 foot of snow). Needless to say this vehicle will mostly be driven for 4 months of the year (winter) or in the event of a driveable flood.

We leased a range rover sport for a while and loved it. My mother has now split her budget (not quite 50 /50!) and wants best of both worlds, cheaper sports car to allow her to spend some money on a 4x4, all we know so far is we want a land rover lol!

We were thinking either a defender or a discovery (used). Her budget is 10-15k.

Your suggestions are welcomed.

For 4 months of the year I would say defender (go anywhere) but total opposite from a Range Rover!!! You could get a nice clean disco TD5 with low mileage for that, however they are expensive when they go wrong!! And they do go wrong!!

You would get a higher spec and newer Freelander 2 for the money, BUT
In any event I'd suggest test driving all three and decide. ;)

Wow, well impressed with the amount of response on here, cheers all!:D

My mother (being my mother!) has changed her mind and now only wants one 4x4 not a 4x4 and a sports car, therefore, spending all her budget on a 4x4.

Looking online now for her, we are thinking of a Disco4. I do have a question about winter tyres (and wheels for them), I should probably post that in another section.

It is simple.

Land Rover Defender - If you want pure luxury, comfort and fuel economy
Land Rover Freelander - If you want superb reliability, unbeaten off road performance and to boost your image
Land Rover Discovery - If you want it all + a bit of rust

she may find the fender a bit basic if shes been in a rr,there uncomfortable, noisy, cramped, defo not a shopping car

I would never say that, their just less comfortable and more cramped when you compare them to a modern car, but tbh, I'll give you that they are noisy  I'd say that falling off a ladder is uncomfortable ;) :D

go with the disco4, awesome engine in them and they have ironed out most of the niggles from the disco3 era.
