Please can someone help, we've not long bought a Disco1 300tdi, it's been great but we needed to change the cambelt.

So we bought a cam belt kit for £80+. We ask a known garage to us to fit it. We've used this garage for some time and they've always been good.

We got a phone call from them saying that after fitting the cambelt the motor run for 40 minutes, then stopped. They opened up the engine and found that the idler pulley had seized up and snapped the cambelt. They said the pulley had burn marks on it and was faulty.

We rang the supplier and they said that the kit was an upgrade kit and that the garage hadn't removed the washer before fitting the pulley. Thus causing the pulley to fail. They had had this happen before many times and it had always been that the garage hadn't removed this washer.

The garage said he'd done these before and had removed the washer.

Who do I believe??????? We have spent all our money and don't know what to do.

Please someone help!! Is our engine deadded?

sounds like it, i'd be pushing for the garage to repair!

might be a bit harder though as you'd supplied the part, you'll have to wait for someone a bit more knowledgeable in this department to come online... a good reason to do stuff yerself... you only have yerself to blame!

engine is probably not dead, possibly just bent a pushrod (or two) may have done a little damage to rocker shaft, but not too difficult to sort, first thing is do not panic, was the engine at tickover when the belt snapped.if so, shouldn't have done much damage. tother question is,why was the engine run for that length of time without the so called mechanic noticing somat wrong, i e very noisy belt squeal,if the pulley had seized i would have thought he would have heard somat amiss,:jaw:i would certainly tell the garage to get it sorted, i am assuming it was not a brit part belt and was the full kit..it's a pity you are too far from me, as i would gladly have a look at it for you, good luck with it and hope you sort it to your satisfaction

youd be able to tell by looking at belt and idler , if idler was stuck forward too far belt would have a mark running were belt wasnt supported ,and front edge of pulley would be clean etc ,its probably only bent a few pushrods ,maybe damaged rockers , a new idler and belt , pushrods and labour should fix it unless very unlucky

Thank you for your comments.

The garage owner went and got a cambelt kit from Land Rover and fitted it for no extra cost. He checked the push rods etc and all seemed fine. Started up engine and all seems ok. We've driven it back and the engine actually seem more powerful but as he did the tappits for us this may have helped?

Anyway, he showed us the two idler wheels (from bearmach), and they were seized with burnt marks on them from the cam belt.
Doe this mean the idler wheels were faulty? The cambelt is a right mess.

Thank god the engines ok!!! I hope.

I have just done my cambelt, what exactly is this washer I don't recall seeing one, is it part of the new kit? or an old part you remove?

Good result, nice to hear it.

As far as I know with the uprated kit, one of the pulleys has the washer built into it and you need to remove the washer in the engine. If you don't the pulley is out of alignment and will rub on the cover and finally seize.

Although the engine seems ok, the saga hasn't ended.

The two Bearmach pulleys seized and broke the cambelt.

The mechanic knew about the washer and I know he's done loads of these engines. The shop I bought it from say the mechanic fitted it incorrectly, but it has different symptoms to to being fitted incorrectly.

How can I get my money back from the shop I bought it from?

In my opinion you cant, it was fitted and it broke, how do you apportion blame now? the garage have fitted a new one without cost to you so all in all it has cost you no more than it would have, bar a little stress the job is done and all is well. IMO just put it down to experience and either do the job yourself next time or let the garage order the bits then it is wholly their risk.

Ditto - I wouldn't be chasing the cambelt kit supplier either.

I would just thank my lucky stars that the garage took an honourable stand and al is well now.

Enjoy your Disco is my advice and don't go chasing agro.

Maybe I didn't make the situation clear.

The garage didn't charge for the extra hours labour, but charged me £129 for the cambelt kit. The broken cambelt kit still cost me £83.

But yes I agree I'll take it as a lesson learnt and thank God it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Ah well in that case I would chase the first supplier. I take it you've got proof where you bought it and a receipt for the 2nd kit as well?

Take it back to the shop you bought it from as it is faulty and covered under warranty.
They should send it back to the manufacturer under warranty to be examined.
If it is faulty they should refund the money but they will want to inspect it first.

If they dont play ball contact your local trading standards.

Well I bought it from a Tinternet shop, so will send the parts back and do battle.

:violent:

Thanks for your advice folks :)
