Buying unseen!?

None available at the moment. About a month ago there were 2 on eBay, one diesel one petrol. Was cheap too.

There aren't 200 left from memory. Some exported and some scrapped. Were 100 petrol and 100 diesel.

Dunsfold has one here.

I prefer the looks of the Wimbledon Green anniversary, don't know why as my last P38 was Alverston and i really like the colour but f i had to pick between the 2 i'd go Green.

Are you looking for Petrol or Diesel?

Distance selling regs don't apply to something purchased online, but then picked up in person as you have the chance to inspect it at the point of pickup. If you purchase and pay upfront AND have it delivered, then you are covered. But virtually all sellers will want a deposit followed by cash on collection - so that rules out distance selling regs.

I thought dealers had to give 6 months engine and gearbox cover under EU law?

There is always the argument about an item being merchantable quality, and buying on credit card always helps.

It will all come down to whether my plums are big enough to risk it :) SWMBO wouldn't be happy though.

I bought mine unseen or at least agreed to buy it unseen and the first time I saw it was when I went to pick it up. Done this three times and been happy each time. The Disco I went to see and then bought was a disaster lol.
I personally wouldn't buy from a garage.

Reckon better with V8 as petrol is cheaper to buy and a petrol RR is cheaper to buy too. Can buy an awful lot of petrol for the price difference.

I agree you can buy a petrol model cheaper than a diesel but as far as mpg and litre price is concerned theres no competition, 10 pence difference means you have to buy 13 litres of petrol to get a free litre compared to diesel but you going to get far further on 12 litres of diesel than you will on 13 litres of petrol.

I will elaborate on my buying experience, mine was badly listed on fleabay on an auction by a Honda dealer who knew zip about range rovers. I spoke to a junior sales guy who sent me some pictures of odds and sods mainly which showed it sat level and at a proper ride height which was a good start. The only faults disclosed were "a window switch pushed through/some damage to center console".

Anyway I called up after the auction had finished with no bids and asked what they would take and it was the starting price so I paid that and some tax. Anyway, this particular car was 270 miles from me having looked at the situation it was going to cost me £100 in a rail ticket, £100 ish in fuel and a day of work (which if I don't take I can get paid for so holiday has a direct cost for me) So I found a chap who delivered cars for a living and he charged a very reasonable £200 plus fuel (£100) to deliver it to my parents house (I was at a track day in the M5...) and that was that.

Dutifully Rob delivered her at 9am to mum and dads, poor sod had set of at 4am I think and couldn't speak highly enough of it saying it was just the same as the new one he had in the late 90's.

So I got lucky! Shes been far from perfect but the "broken center console" turned out to be a dicky window switch but as mentioned before I've had to due a few more bits and pieces. First job was a weak compressor so rebuilt that and it cured slow to respond air suspension. The Exhaust was about ruined (original from 99!) so I changed that and took out the center box to make it a bit more lively, radiator was also looking tired so changed that and the air springs eventually failed earlier this year so I changed them. Other than that, routine servicing, Oil and autobox fluid and diff oils have been changed. Sadly the original radio (display already failed on getting her) had to be changed for another OEM Alpine head unit and a new main battery completes the list of things I've had to do in 20 months and around 5000 miles.

Looking bad compared to a normal car its a horrific amount of work but hey, thats the charm of the green oval!

(To compare, I have a BMW 650i which I've done 6000 miles in in the last 10 months and its cost me a liter of oil!)

Cheaper to buy, but the £3.5K for an engine when the liners drop will be as much as you would pay for a good diesel, then you have the fuel costs.
If you are unlucky enough to lose a cylinder head on a diesel, it can be fixed for £900 or less.:p

I have just bought my second p38, and bought it unseen!

I had / have a 2001 lpg bordeaux, that i have owned for 18 months now, but have kept my email alerts active on a certain car trader website. I've seen a few rangies come up that meet my criteria, but not many, so.have happily kept the 4.0

About a month and a half ago one came up that really caught my eye, it had huge milage, but a new engine, was a vogue, and many other things besides. The trouble was I was deployed with the royal navy, and not due back for a month! So a lot of emails and photos started flying back and forth, and I decided that I wanted this car. I was lucky, having owned the other rangie, I'd learnt what to check and ask, so I wrote several very detailed emails, then I was even luckier, the car was in a city I had some extended family in, so I got a cousin to make sure everything we'd talked about in the emails was correct, that way he didn't need to know much about range rovers, just check the emails!

In the end I bought it, and have had it for a few weeks now. I'm so glad I did, because it's awesome and so much better than the bordeaux! It was a bit of a punt, but it was the right car at the right price with all the paperwork. I also recommend getting the mot certificate number, then you can check the history back to 2004 or something like that.

So it is very possible to buy from a distance, but knowing what to ask is essential IMHO.

A side note, I love my other rangie, the bordeaux, but it is much lower spec than the voice, and the performance difference between its 4.0 and the newer 4.6 is just amazing. I now need to tart it up, get it back on the road and sell it, SWMBO was not happy, and is insisting that I cannot keep both!

Please forgive the uber post, and any typos, it's all been done from a phone!

Nice spin out in one this morning as it was for sale locally.
Negatives
  • Only a DT so cloth seats
  • Some bubbling of paintwork
  • Sluggish, even for a diesel
Positives
  • Only a DT so less to go wrong
  • Cloth seats don't need heaters
  • Epsom green
  • MOT history almost immaculate
£2250 seems a bit much though.
Also went out in a Disco 2 but that's another story.

What's the mileage? For comparison, I paid £2k for a 1998 DSE with 125k-ish miles last year.
The 'sluggish' could well be a blocked map sensor pipe, or badly timed FIP. Mine had both and, once sorted, I've been very happy with the performance.
