Breakdown Cover

I have "Personal" cover with RAC. Which states it "Covers you as a driver or passenger in any vehicle."
I remember reading the cavaets before and there was no mention of age (I used to drive a 15 year old Fiesta) ... but I have just noticed this on there:
"Non commercial vehicles only, excluding certain vehicle types."
which might require a read up on.. especially for me now as I believe my defender - which is a hard top conversion - still comes up as a commercial vehicle on some computer systems.
When my mate gets into work I'll ask him too, because he drives a 20 year old rover with 212,000 on the clock. Last year he actually got a letter from his breakdown providers warning him he'd hit his annual callout limit when his throttle cable broke on the motor way.. it was about his 4th call out of the year!

We do offer a breakdown service at Flux. It covers homestart, roadside assistance, 60 days worth of EU cover, relay to a garage/home/final destination, accident recovery, puncture assistance and they'll also collect you for running out of fuel. It's with a company called Equity Red Star, they use exactly the same recovery agents as the RAC and Green Flag.
The prices do vary with us based on the type of vehicle you are wanting to cover, and whether you bolt it on to a policy at inceptio/within 14 days of inception.

I use the AA, rescued classics on several occasionsnot an issue 30-40 years old , never had a problem

My breakdown cover is with Footman James as part of my insurance. The usual stuff, but no homestart. No problem on my 50 year old 109. IIRC its costing £30 / year and I'm averaging about 1 call every year, so I'm getting my moneys worth!
ha. well, would you believe it, on the drive home from the dealer (Maidenhead) to Bristol, we broke down, had to call the RAC, and there wasn't a single question about whether it was a commercial vehicle or not (it is indeed a light utility on the V5). they took the reg, said "thats a Land Rover Defender" and dispatched a mechanic. they even commented that it might take a little longer to get a truck that could take a 4x4 should it come to a tow...
in the end the mechanic arrived in about 30 minutes and fixed it road-side in 5 more. (I had called the garage by this point and they were ready to re-receive it if it needed) turned out to be a blown turbo hose, just a jubilee clip to fix.
In the future, I look forward to being able to fix stuff like that myself (of course) but for those few minutes, after that bang-and-whizz I was delighted with the service the RAC afforded us.

Use AA only had to call 3 times in 20 years! mostly due to sorting stuff myself but once had cambelt go on shagged old Rover saloon, sorted roadside by AA as didnt have the crap Honda engine in it so no stuffed valves, cost was just £16 for the belt, poor bas**d did it in the rain too.
Last time was on my motor home thats 19 years old, I new it was a fuel solenoid prob but didnt have the bits with me, again AA did it roadside, They are not the cheapest but no small print on age of vehicle and swift service..well so far anyways

AA always been good to me... 20 years ago replaced half shaft on 109 Ambulance. I didn't have the cash on me to pay for the part so he very nicely took a cheque later on. Many hours messing about. Not sure if its the same now?

Equity red star are in the same league as Greenflag and Brittania etc as all their patrols are local recovery companies.
Whoever you use, don't go to StartRescue, they may be cheap but the fun will begin if you ever need them, their call staff cannot read maps.
I sued them for 12 months a couple of years ago and had the misfortune to have to call them out twice on one journey on the motorbike (rear puncture then fuel pump relay).
For the puncture, we were Southbound on the A1 between the A64 junction and where it splits off to the A1 and M1 (could read the signs and junction numbers from where we were at. They could not find either of the roads A1 or A64 on their maps or when I told them it was just South West of York, they could not find York on their maps.
They tried to send the truck 40 miles north of where I was at, then tried to send us 60 miles north to get a replacement tyre instead of somewhere in York itself.
Eventually got it sorted and spluttered to a stop entering Cirencester, and did not have any tools on me (fuel pump or relay went - found it was relay when recovered home - mechanic had tried to say it was the fuel pump itself). Once again StartRescue could not find the roads or Cirencester on their maps.
I don't normally swear much but a few swear words were uttered that day.

they will only recover you to the place determined by the insurance company, not where you want it taken.

Are you on about the breakdown cover or the recovery in the event of an accident?
It is definitely worth checking up on this. I have "national recovery" on RAC meaning they will tow me anywhere I want on breakdown - so if I was in Newcastle, I could get them to bring me all the way back to the garage I want in Bristol - (poor tow truck driver).
It may well be different on accident though, I know the RAC can be b*stards on accident recovery work with surcharges and rules.

Most of the breakdown clubs will charge you for recovery in the event of an accident.
Yeah, My RAC stuff says in the small print
"^ Wherever possible, the RAC will recover the cost of the recovery service from your insurer or the 3rd party insurer. If this is not possible, you will be asked to pay for the recovery."
which suggests that if, for example, you weren't going to make an insurance claim, they would recover the costs from you - and thus it would cost you.
My friend stacked his VW Golf into a motorway roundabout and when he rang the RAC they would only tow him to the nearest appropriate garage for around £150... so he put his bumper on the back seat and hobbled it home himself

Have you experienced this yourself with this service? If this is the case I will be chasing things up when I get into the office.
But as far as I am aware for the roadside recovery they will take you anywhere.

Ive used your recovery. Was far away fron home. Recovered to a garage not local to me. No problems at all. About th same price as green flag iirc.

when I had an accident, Equity red star used a local recovery company who said they were only authorised to take the vehicle, to a local storage compound, not my house, as the contract was between them and Equity Red Star and not myself. I was concerned that, as the vehicle had no roof, it would be water damaged by being left outside. I would point out that this was vehicle only - not vehicle and passengers, as they were taken to hospital.
My son had his car taken from his house in Basingstoke, to the insurance companies "approved repairer" close to Bracknell, for repair evaluation. It was then classed as BER and when he asked for it back, he was told that it was his responsibility to come and collect it; or they could deliver it back for £60.
