Brake disc Thickness

I had my 300TDi '94 Disco on a ramp to see check if the previous owner was as concientious as they should've been.

The brake discs looked rather thin (approx 10 mm) to my un-educated eyes for stopping a big car.

What should they be? I couldn't see this info in the Owner's or Haynes manuals.


The front to back brake pipes also looked corroded - Does this happen? I don't get access to a ramp very often and so checking on this will be difficult. My dad tells me of a spray-on wax sealant that he used in the past - any thoughts or recommendations?

I now appreciate that title can be read in two ways!

According to the Land Rover manual, front discs are a minimum 13mm thick and rears a minimum 12mm thick. This is for none - ABS discs, as far as I can tell. It doesn`t give measurements for the ABS discs!
As far as brake pipes are concerned - yes, they do tend to rust. Once they`ve corroded, it`s difficult to stop it getting worse. Try painting them with grease or hammerite after you`ve wire-brushed the rust off.

No ABS on my car, so your hard numbers appreciated, but they still seem small even for minima - Just have to wait until the new discs arrive to see fat ones.

I will replace the pipes, as this vehicle carries the clan about. Will investigate some kind of protective 'paint' for the new pipes.

If it`s any consolation, an ex-colleague of mine (who also lectured in Motor Vehicle Engineering, and should have known better), had a pair of front discs on his Rover 2000 that looked like LP records, and were about the same thickness!

You can buy brake pipe now that's already plastic-coated, but I can`t remeber where from!

Best stuff to put on brake pipes to stop rusting through is nail varnish,easy to apply and so many colors but i think clear would be best for mot purposes,tiga.
