novice question i know, but what is the significance of blue, yellow or gren pin colour on bow shackles. I naively thought it was linked to the diameter of the pin or breaking strain but i have blue pins in different sizes and strengths of shackle.

thanks in adance

green pins are normally an alloy as used off shore etc

but the old adage allways rings true as with strops , chains and all lifting gear dont trust the colour check the swl hard stamped on it

swl = safe working load

or wll european spec = working load limit

And don't forget that lifting slings, strops and Shackles which are stamped or marked with a SWL (not all off them are) havde a safety factor of approx 7:1 so a 1 ton strap has a breaking strain of about 7 tonnes.

This prevents the gear been used to the limits of it's real strength and reduces the likelyhood of it snapping after 6 or 7 uses.

Whereas towing straps aren't tested or marked. and should never be used for lifting. Right that's me H&S lecture for the day.

And a very useful little lecture too.
Thanks.

thanks one and all, i am now relieved and reassured that that stamped swl on the shackle is the issue, rather than pin colour

thanks
