Hi,

I've just changed the oil and filter in my Freelander - the stuff that came out was like tar, but when I checked after running it for 10 minutes or so after I re-filled it, it was still black. Is there a way I can flush all the old stuf out before re-filling it again.

Thanks
Tony

PS is there some good pictures of where the fuel filter is, as I can't seem to find it on my 03 plate TD4. I've looked on the left of the engine compartment and the right wheel arch.

dont buy engine flush as its an expensive way of buying paraffin black is normal thickening is because it was in tooo long ,buy some good fleet oil fromk local motor factor (trade one),change frequently or in your case after a few miles to clear engine

Oil shouldn't be as thick as tar but will always be black even just after a change. Just use good quality fully synthetic & change it regularly & it'll be ok.
Your fuel filter is under the drivers side rear wheelarch but you have to remove the wheel & front half of the wheelarch liner to access it.
All in all a pain of a job.

Oil will always discolour quite quickly in a diesel but as already stated, regular changes will help as will ensuring you have completely drained all the old oil in the first place. You make no mention of changing the oil filter, you did that at the same time didn't you?

When my wife bought her TD4 it had supposidly had a 'service' by the supplying LR dealer but I was slightly concerned by the blackness of the oil. As oil is about the most important component in your engine yet one of the cheapest I decided that a drain & refil with Castrol Edge was in order as was a new filter. Can't comment on how old the oil was but the filter was possibly the original as it was almost completely mis-shapen and didn't resemble a filter at all. Since then the oil & filter are replaced at 6-month /3K mile intervals and it certainly never looks as black as the original stuff did.
With regards to draining all the old oil, I always manage to get the correct amount of 6.8L out yet others say they never get more than 5.5L out of theirs. Assuming they haven't filled their sumps with expanding foam I guess that there is still some oil sitting in there somewhere hence the reason they take less to re-fill.

When the bolt fell out of my oil pump drive on my 2001 TD5 I had the engine removed and stripped to check everything for damage. Everything was cleaned and once put back together with new shells, sprocket and bolt, it was filled with fully synthetic oil, after 2500 miles the oil was still like new.

Like James said, I change the oil in all my Land Rovers every 5000k and yes its black but its still fine for the engine. But changing the oil often will make sure you get the very best out of your Land Rover.

try draining over night and put the drain plug on your seat wiped before of course so you will not for get you have no oil in have the passanger side slightly raised higher and then all the oil should run out

Tip
Kwikfit will do an oil and filter change using fully synth Mobil 3000 for £34 drive in drive out - I think that's good value for money it includes pan removal as well.

My diesel engine oil isn't black:confused:

I change it regularly and it goes from light brown to dark brown when ready for changing.

I change it twice a year, once in Spring and once in Autumn:)

People leave oil in too long these days in my opinion.

Tesco is selling engine oil cheap. Castrol magnetec 2L £8.50. Have a look on their website.

But think about it the Freelander takes 6 lts and isn't it semi synth then there is the filter and doing it.
Kwik fit £34 all in and Mobil 3000 full synth

Yes. Depends if you prefer to do it yourself. Also semi synthetic is ok for most engines so personally I wouldn't bother with full myself, unless the manufacturer recommends it. It's all hyp. Don't see the point of the extra cost. Oil filters are £5.25+vat at the main stealers.

how do you think people managed before synthetic good mineral is fine to ,its only long life of oil manufacturers are after not long life of engine

We were hard people in those days and then we saw the light - come on full synth for the same or less than semi - it's a no brainer for me - I find the engine is do much sweeter on it and it has been around for a while now.

On a Golf TDi I had I drained the oil, then refilled with a gallon of parafin, left in overnight (without starting!!!), drained parafin then filled with engine oil.

Parafin came out absolutely black!
