Can anyone give an idea as to what could be wrong with a 2001 TD4? The back window doesn't go down by its usual half inch when trying to open the tailgate. As a result the boot doesn't open. The window wont even open off the interior switch. I can hear the motor whirring like its just closing but it just wont move. Thought it might have been frozen as it was minus 8 up here last week but its above freezing now and still not working so........ideas, please?

Just noticed the rear wiper isn't working either and the alarm chirps when locking. Got to be something with the back door. Must check the wiring, etc.

is it the 3 door ? if so, it might be that the ecu thinks the roof is off, monitored by a microswitch. This would stop wiper from working and cause chirp from alarm when locking.

worth a check.

if however, regulator cable has snapped, and you can hear the motor going, the ecu would think the window was downeven when it wasn't. this would a)disable the rear wiper and b) cause the alarm to chirp when locking.

as you said you can hear the motor wiring, I'm gonna stick with regulator cable snapped. If the ecu thought the roof was off, the rear window would drop and you wouldn't be able to raise it, so you wouldn't hear the motor running.

Its a five door so the roof is permanently attached. Doesn't sound like the cable snapped as it doesn't keep going round and round when the button is pressed, its more like the noise you get when you keep a finger on the normal window up button like a motor slowing or trying to work. Hopefully its just a sensor. It's coming apart tomorrow anyway so we'll hopefully see.........

Its the cable which has snapped. Warranty company, Motor Care Warranties wont cover it as apparently its normal to fail!!! £500 for a lifetime warranty, renewable every year when you service the car and it only seems to cover things that fail if they are brand new and unused. The slightest hint of something daring to have been used and no, no! And yes it has taken since December for this to be rejected. Am still waiting for settlement for an approved (reluctantly) claim on the air con from May last year.
