Buffeting wind noise with 1 window open

Our 2011 Freelander HSE SD4 has the most appalling wind buffeting/interior 'cabin' pressure problem when only 1 window is opened. Our elderly dog has taken to wanting to have his head out of the window at all times when travelling in the car. In our Defender this is not an issue (just cold!) but in the Freelander it is impossible to have only 1 window open - if we do there is really bad percussive pressurisation buffeting that happens in the cabin. To alleviate the issue another window (opposite side) has to be opened as well. This makes for a pretty noisy and cold journey
Does this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions as to how we can reduce this? Are wind deflectors a possibility?

If it's just when one rear window is open, then it's completely normal in pretty much any large car. The single window open turns the car in to an organ pipe, whose resonance is just a couple of Hz.
Opening the opposite window cancels out the organ pipe effect.
 
Yep, every car I've ever had does it. Cracking open any one of the other windows just a smidge is usually enough to stop it.

Every car I ever had was the same, open one rear window and the noise is deafening.

We've had large cars/double cab trucks for years. This is the 1st time we've experienced such a noticeable buffeting, especially at relatively low speeds (30mph+). Our Defender does it at 50mph+. Yes it is somewhat alleviated by opening an opposite window as I noted in the OP - but just cracking the window isn't enough, it has to be appreciably open.
We have had wind deflectors on the doors in the previous vehicles - was just wondering if anyone had any experience of these on the Freelander.

I have wind deflectors on my front windows but I haven't tried driving with a rear window down. They probably wouldn't make any difference but I'll give it a try and report back however mine is a 2004 FL1 so probably not Representative.
Have you tried cracking open the boot window? Can you do that in a FL2

We have a sunroof - even with that tilted open there isn't much alleviation of the buffeting. No opening window on the tailgate - and I'm not going to use a hammer...🤣
 
LR obviously decided that the Tailgate window had caused quite enough problems for FL1 owners and decided to delete it without consulting any dogs as to their preference !

Having read the history of the FL1 - the only reason the rear window got oh so complicated was because the designer wanted the 3 door to have a 'no glass' rear when the top was off. So - an auto switch on the 3 door to drop the glass with the lid off. Then the door interlock and wiper and washer and calibration all became a necessity for it to work.

Obvs the 5 door could have had a frame but hey, why design a different door when you already have one from the 3 door ?

Sad that I know this but Devon can be a lonely place :)
