hi every one, posted a thread yesterday regarding i had no drive in forward gears but could go backwards. been up since first light have jacked up all wheels whilst in park & all wheels are holding as they should. jacked up all wheels in neutral & all wheels turn (& both prop shafts respectively) i then started it up & try to select gears Reverse gave my a clunk as it does when it engages, drive 1 & 2 a slight clunk but no drive & 1 gave a clunk & drive. has anybody got any ideas as im getting worried now that the box might be stuffed. i thought by jacking it up a problem with the half shafts /cv joints would not make the props turn when turning the wheels.

I take it this is an auto?? HAve you tried engaging difflock? if you have broken an halfshaft (very possible) then wheels will still turn. but you'll get no drive because drive will be sent to the wheel with least resistance (the broken one) other 3 won't move. so no drive.

thanks redhand it is an auto, so if i engage difflock then jack it up i should be able to turn the offending wheel with the stuffed halfshaft? i forgot to mention when i lost forward drive there was a bang i have checked the atf & it is not burnt. Snoops

if you have lost forward but have reverse clutch pack A is burnt out ,drain a little oil out of gear box if its blackish and smells burnt it proves it

Yes to the above. But JM is the expert in these things (Auto's are black magic to me) so if he thinks clutch pack then he' usually right. But no harm trying difflock first.

i would try as many different diagnnostics techniquies too as we all know its not allways the obvious/usual faults

Hi James. fluid fine no discoloration or smell. as it came out the bottle
how did you check by dipstick or draining a little out ?the overrun clutch in clucth pack c can also give problems by not locking but should drive in 1,but the first thing after checking oil if ok ,is checking box oil level ,and the mechanicals as rh said

Thanks for both of your replies, again jacked up all wheels whilst in diff lock none of the wheel turned freely & locked up after about a quarter of a turn. both front wheels with diff lock disengaged turn forward but lock up after half a turn backward. the atf was checked by dipstick, does this mean i have to drain some out to check?
Thanks Snoops

its best too ,if you put it in p ,it shouldnt make any difference which way you turn wheel where all wheels off the ground at the same time or one at a time was auto in n and hand brake off ,direction you turn wheel shouldnt matter

HI james i tried the wheels one at a time, i will jack up the front axle & support it on stands, is it best to put into neutral with handbrake off & should the wheels turn freely or lock up forwards & backwards?
thanks snoops

just tried 1 gear drive in first gear when other forward gears selected no drive but a whirring sound from gearbox. could this possibly be adjustment on the cable or worse?
thanks snoops
