Hi Guys!

As some will know I’ve recently replaced the PTU and front drive shafts on the Freelander, as well as servicing the Haldex and replacing all the oils etc….

The car is now driving much smoother and quieter than before!

One thing I have noticed today is when driving between 20mph and 40mph, if I let off the throttle completely, I get what sounds like a tap or a slight clunk, not very loud but it I can here it when the blower and radio are off? I also noticed as I parked up, going from drive or park into reverse it makes the same noise as reverse gear engages?

Any ideas? Is it the same problem causing both noises? It didn’t seem to do it under acceleration, only when you completely take you foot off the throttle!

How is the lower engine steady bush? Mine was perished and very soft, which allowed the bottom of the engine to move quite a lot. The replacement seems quite soft, but nothing like as soft as the perished one. As the engine is softly mounted to improve vehicle refinement, it doesn't take much loss of support for the engine to move more than it should, which can cause unintended contact with other components.

Ok, finally got chance to have a proper look at this tap/click/clunk noise yesterday.

So with the wife sat in the driver seat and me under the car! She went from park, to reverse to drive to reverse to drive etc etc…. I couldn’t see or hear anything over the sound of the engine! The wife said she could hear the noise inside the car, so I went to the back to check the rear diff, while I was down there I could clearly hear the noise coming from the front! When I took it out for a quick drive before this test I did think the sound seemed to be coming from the driver footwell area… So I thought I’d check the new driver side drive shaft, hey presto! The joint where the shaft fits to the hub is making a horrid creaking crunch followed by a knock everytime the wife goes from Drive to Reverse! If I grabbed hold of the shaft I can actually feel it happening..

I bought the part from John Craddock, so you would think it would be decent quality? It actually came in a Britpart box… So tomorrow I’m going to have to give them a call and see what they are going to suggest to get this problem sorted out!

Anyone else had issues with new parts malfunctioning within weeks of being installed?
