Just taken my transfer box off to try and find what's causing the dreaded clunk in the drivetrain. The splines on the extended output coupling of the MT82 look good and the bearings on the LT230 have no side play or whines. The axles don't have much play , the CV joints are perfect and the half shafts were replaced recently. The clunk sound comes from where the transfer box is so I'm assuming there's something amiss there. When you rotate just the two outputs against each other with or without the diff lock on there's not too much rotational play but when you turn the gearbox input shaft (using the loose stub of the splined coupling) whilst holding the outputs there's a lot more play, probably twice as much . The vehicle has done 160 thousand miles and the transfer box is all working as it should apart from the clunk which is in first and second gear . Is the transfer box worn out and in need of refurbishing? Thanks.
