Morning, nearly welded the whole of the boot floor and some bits in the arches but we're going to make a start on the front chassis-body mounts. It looks like this on both sides and the MOT guys didn't like it!
Any idea the best way to weld this? I was thinking about jacking the body off the chassis, dropping the bolts off the mount, and with a bit of steel, weld it on bottom of the body, above the rubber and hammer it round then weld up sides.
But not sure how that'll work once I get the bits and pieces apart - anyone had to fix this bit before?

Any tips or suggestions welcomed!

Haha - sorry, was so excited when I saw the pic, I didn't see that last bit!

Aw, that's the rear mount but it looks like it'd work. Might have a stab at making my own...then give up and buy them!

Thanks again.

you want the front panel body mount - it comes with, surprisingly, the complete front panel - it is easy to fabricate - it is basically a three sided, close ended box section made out of 0.8mm steel. I reckon tho - ehen yu take the headlight sections off, you will find it all rotten - they usually are :(

Oh dear, hope that's not the case. This things is as rotten as a pear in a few places but surprisingly solid over the rest of it.

Thank for your advice, I'll have a poke around and see how bad it is. Was guna crack on with it this afternoon but looks like it's going to rain anyway now...might go for a pint instead!

Ended up taking the bumper and the rest off to get a proper look. The rest of the front panel is OK - but how the hell can I fix these bits? Can I jack the body off the chassis a few inches - need to remove the rubber bush underneath. Got the top one out and the bolt but I'm at a loss of how to do this bit. It's the last area that needs welding. Don't fancy replacing the whole panel as it's spot welded in and not in that bad condition - it's the plate at the base of the mount that's ****e. If I could jack body of chassic, cut old plate out and weld new one in, that'd work. But is that possible?

Any suggestions?

Well, in the past I'd have wedged some wood between the chassis and the body then cut away the area around the body mount with a grinder/dremel/hammer and chisel, depending on what you can get at it with.

Then I'd fabricate the new section, bolt it to the rubber mount and weld it to the body in short bursts so as not to burn the mount. No doubt the professionals wouldn't do it that way but I'm not one!

Having said that, I've faffed around for weeks doing jobs that way. I don't know the cost of a complete front panel but if it's not excessive I'd be tempted to use one. It might speed the job up no end and you'll be able to forget about the front end for the remaining life of the disco.

I was thinking of the more heath robinson approach anyway...so I can jack the body off the chassis a bit? I've got a high lift jack and some blocks.
I did look at getting hold of the front panel but couldn't find one with a picture on paddocks or lrdirect. Wanted to make sure I'm getting the right parts.
I did also think of welding plate around the area and boxin it in for the MOT - trouble is it'd have to be done again properly one day an I may just make it more difficult!

Don't know about jacking the body up, I've never tried. I guess if you undid the bolts on the mounts at either end of the sills you might be able to.

I was thinking more like leaving the body where it is, fastening the new metal to the mount, bolting the mount to the chassis and then weld.....though something might well get in the way to make that difficult:D

I suppose that could work...there is a lot of stuff in the area there. The rad and intercooler are pretty close, the headlamp surrounds are kind of in the way. It's really not the best place to be getting into! I might just feck it off and hide it away for the MOT - the body's held in on loads of other places so can't be that dangerous! haha

Still can't find the repair panel on any website for the job. It's looking a bit dire.

Thanks for your help Sparks

I did mine complete front panel took me 2 hrs and done mine was rotten right and I had a shunt some lady driver pull out in front of me and I sweved anyway hit her and I claimed off her insurance etc to cut short the story one side of the headlight front panel was squashed etc and I seen the right side was rotten so i ordered a new one via Britpart via my local Landrover parts Macdonalds engines at Oswestry etc cost 185 quids if I remember and new bonnet cable and i cutted away the old panel using air chesil etc and then bolted the new panel on and weld the four spot holes that I pre drilled aloong the edges by the headlights so it attached to the inner wings etc and then it was done u would be better off to put a new front panel etc for future mots etc

£185? Jeez, that's more than I was expecting! Does sounds like a better way to do it but not sure I've got the reddies. Still can't find one for sale on the interweb though. Might call up local dealer and see what they say.

Cheers for the info Taffy.
