I have managed to stretch the aluminium threads on one of my engine mounts.

the bolt is fine M14, the aluminium is shot.

Anyone have any smart ideas to repair the thread, apart from a re-tap of M14 or new part.

Can you get any alternatives for thread repair? I cant use super strong thread lock as the bolt must not be permananetly fixed in position.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cool, loads of good kit on those links.

I have heard about the helicoil, is it supposed to be tricky to fit?

The brass inserts look good as well, only I am restricted to using domestic size drill bits and taps. I dont fancy a major job of drilling oversize bores, not to mention the expense of the parts.

mmmm will have to think about this.
 
this is why we have torque settings. heli-coil yer best bet, or re-tap one size up.

I have got the full range of torque wrenches, its the stretching on the threads that has started this, even with a supported jack under the engine you are restling with the allignment, crap design and steel and alum never mix.;)
 
scrap that...just looked at yer second piccy

See attached pic from side view, not much scope for movement, I was thinking of drilling and tapping M12, salp bang in the centre of the two existing M14 bolts.

shud be no prob - take orf the ali mount and take it to a local engineering co - they will be able to fit in a helicoil in about 10 mins.

I would, only you see the 4 bolts securing it to the block, I tried to remove one of them.....:eek: Its too long for removal, it fouls on the bodywork in the engine bay. It means lowering the engine to allow retrieval of the 4 smaller bolts.

hmmm....drilling a third hole wouldnt leave much ali behind for strength....either helicoil or as per take5's post....that stuff gets pretty hard, probably as hard as ali. then, for piece of mind, go with a third hole at maybe 8mm or so.
 
Had a werd wiff porky [he's got city un guilds in eginearin] un he sis heli coils like wot bushy sid is the best method for this job [he's er furra bread] :) :) :)
 
Belzona are based in me home town so I know quite a bit about 'em - me old man regularly used Belzona molecular products when repairing Drax and Ferrybridge powerstations in the late eighties.

Looks like proper stuff :)

What about filling and re-tap with M12, using an M12 bolt instead.

Its the angle of the bolts that takes most of the strain, not so much the threads. The K-series is only 95kg.

Trying to source a M14 tap piece locally, depending on price I will consider the way forward.

wuz thinkin about that.....thing that wud worry me is the vibrations the gooey stuff is going live thru....i dont know how good the stuff is under those conditions. add to that the heat as well as the inevitable oil.....dunno mate.
