Hello. I have in the dim and distant past owned a Defender, Range Rover and Freelander (no sniggering  )

We live in the countryside and have recently been plagued with the floods and have had major problems trying to get out of our village. We drive a Nissan Quashqai (no sniggering again ;) ).

So we've decided that we need to get ourselves a 4wd to be able to bypass the flooded lanes and snow/ice when we get some.

We have approx 8k to spend but don't know which to go for. Not interested in a Freelander or Range Rover. Which leaves the Defender swb or the Discovery. For the money I have discovered you can get a much newer Discovery, but which one will be better for what we want?

Any suggestions very welcome plus horror stories and particular models to steer clear of. So far I've found a couple of Discovery's both TD5 2.5 diesel one GS one S both 56k miles with fsh one is a 2000 and one a 2003.

 squashcush? No...it's an SPV not a 4wd altho they do now have one but it's too low down. I've got the petrol 2wd.

ANYTHING WITH A LANDROVER BADGE HAS TO BE AN IMPROVEMENT. EVEN A F...F....F.....F....FREELANDER. LOL.

If you like yer creature comforts go for the discovery. If you want a 'get out me way, coming through' motor then have the Defender.

Qashqai - propping up Nissan sales I hear and based on the Nissan X-crement 2. Good car.

Anyhoo - there's loads of early Disco 2's about in your price range - for what you want it for that might fit the bill very well.

depends on your idea of a flood ie 6"12" over your bonnet if you want to deal with serious water defender is your best bet snow ice etc pretty much of a much but as discos more car like inside hader to dry where as i jet wast the floor of my dafender

I would be looking at a hagglunds BV206 for regular use in those type of conditions esp floods, as it can get quite expensive maintaining a LR for regular wading JMHO:)

Defender vs Disco: You'll get more for your money with a Discovery Td1 or TD, and it will be more than capable for waht you are looking for.

Don't rule out the Freelander - suprisingly capable on ice/snow.

Defender = rattles, lack of creature comfort, brilliant off road, defening on motorway, good work horse, almost unbreakable etc etc

Freelander = even less rattles, no chassis, more car like, less wading depth, reasonible off road (no low range tho)

Disco = less rattles, more comfort, gizmos on higher spec models, quieter, still impressive off road, 90% unbreakable

Disco 3 = still pricey, awesome off road, awesome on road I WANT ONE !!

Rangie = massive running costs, too posh for off road (unless you get an early one and strip it out, then very impressive off road
