Right Here Goes...

1. What is the correct Rev Limit for a 1996 300TDi (Mine since I have had it lets the Turbo kick in at about 2200rpm then it is like hitting a brick wall at about 3700rpm)

2. Why does my speedo from the odd occation decide to turn into a windscreen wiper (Flying back and forward from 0-130mph)

3. Can I run my 1996 300TDi on straight VEG oil (ASDA OWN) without mixing anything with it?

Many thanks for reading, hoping for replies :)

Sounds right.

Loose wire on the alternator, look for the small wire with a female spade terminal on the back of yer alternator, squeeze it a bit tighter with a pair of pliers.

Yes but you're better off running it on a 70/30 Veg Oil/diesel mix to help with cold starting.

ffs i knew they had the rev counter coming orf the alt but now the speedo. amazing what they come up wiff these daze. do you think they have the fuel gauge getting its feed from the alt soon?

Just as a matter of interest, why are you revving to 3700?? You'll be telling us next that the fuel consumption is poor:rolleyes:

can someone explain to me how the speedo runs orf the alternator? dont it matter wot gear you is in too - an wot happens if yu rev it at the traffic lights?

does the disco have a leccy speedo or is it still a mechanical one, a la series

if it a leccy one yer wanna check the connection at g/box and speedo head. if it mecahnical yer cable is probelly on it way out

1. you should get more than 3700 revs over 4k anyway... maybe time to change a filter?
2. sounds like you speedo cable is on the blink... unless your talking about the Rev counter... then see redhand
3. see redhand

Have you never taken the rev's high to gain a little pace when overtaking or even having a little fun :D
On the fuel side, who cares, it's only money at the end of the day and you can't take it with you :p

Hi Simon, I can see that you are a bit offended by my comments, for which I applogise.

Now, onto effective overtakes, taking into account that it's torque not power the one needs to do quick and safe overtakes, I usually find that the best performance is obtained by revving to about 2,800 to 2,900rpm so that as you change to the next higher gear you drop back into the torque band where the turbo is singing along nicely.

This approach produces quick (in relative terms you understand, we are talking Discos) overtakes and leaves plenty of headroom in the rev band, just in case you need it. If you rev to 3,700, then when you change form say 3rd to 4th, you'll be doing roughly 3000rpm in 4th, so coming to the end of the power band.

What do you think?

Incidently, the comment about not being concerned at all about fuel consumption and "it's only money.........after all" it an absolute gift to the tree huggers.

Can't help with the other questions but maybe be of help with your brickwall.

What does she rev to in neutral, this is called 'flight speed'.... should be around 4,300 rpm maybe a little more.

.....max power for the TDi 300 is produced @ 4,000 rpm...if it's not getting there in neutral it won't get any higher rpm under load and will almost certainly be lower, the fuel pump will 'governing' (or cutting off) the maximum injected fuel far too early.:(

Don't worry yet though, it could just be too much slack in the throttle cable. With the engine off, bonnet open, get someone to watch the pump throttle arm to make sure you are getting full throttle when your foot is 'on the floor'...common fault but very easy to miss:cool:

Cheers for the replys guys.

Right the speedo is now fixed, found the gearbox sensor, unplugged and found the terminals a little corroded, cleaned up and gave them a coating with vacaline, took for a long drive yesterday and not a blip from the speedo.

Next the REVs, had the clutch fitted last Friday, I asked ROEAN (Landy Specialists) about the REV problem and the lads tell me the alternator has the wrong pully on, it is giving out the correct voltage (Charge) but giving the incorrect output voltage for the revs this is due to it is not spinning at the correct speed for engine revs.

Last but not least, running the OLD GIRL now on 30/70 mix (bias to VEG Oil), starts fine in the morning and runs without a glitch (Drawback smells like a chip shop) Lol.
Managed to get a BOOKERS discount account card so Veg Oil is 68p per Ltr :)

Cheers again for the advice.

Hi Simon, purely in the interests of science and the forum you understand, I did some tests the other day regarding how high my engine will rev.

The setup was:

1. At idle, once warm, I tried to find max revs, I say tried because at 4500rpm I chickened out;

2. The on the road, slight uphill rise, selected 2nd gear on the auto and gave it the berries - she was off like the bloody clappers. Again I chickened out whilst she was still pulling further up the revs, 4200rpm was enough for me.

So, to conclude, no brick walls hit, pulled like a train - don't know but I hope that helps to at least understand how they can go??

Simon I bought some veg oil from BOOKERS the other day ,worked out 77p ltr but when I read ingredients it said made with soya and with anti-foaming agents .Have I bought the wrong stuff? Not used it yet but could take it back or have lots of fry ups.

Hi chaps, my 200 will rev alot higher than you all are claiming, but not to boast i found that the higher rev climb was gained by tweaking with the fueling an boost. although even if yer do decide to gun it all the way, theres no point 4k and above as your power will start to dissapear, the way i prefere to drive and what i find to be the quickest is by changin early and from the 2200 rpm rev range just let the torque do all the work, much smoother ride, quieter, and quicker, soppose this all depends on peoples engine conditions and tuning really.

The thing is about our diesel they are not meant to be reved like a petrol car.

You have to accept that you will get there slowly !

asda are currentlly doing a 15 liter barrel for £11.50 but that said it was made from soya not rapeseed so i left it..

would be nice to know if it has been used safely and what drawbacks soya as over rapeseed if any ?
