Hi all, i want to make a tool to lock my crank when loosening/tightening the dreaded bolt, can someone confirm these dimensions please...

70mm long,
90mm outside diameter,
60mm inside diameter,
4 x 8.5mm holes on a 75mm pcd at 90 degree spacing.

I got the size from a search but it seems very long, does anyone know what the distance is from the front of the pulley to the face where the tool bolts is, it would be best to keep it as short as possible.

As far as i know, the inside diameter just has to clear the 27mm socket so any diameter that does so should be ok here.

Didnt know there WAS a tool for crank-lock to take the force of undoing the pulley bolt !!
I shall have to read my workshop manual more thoroughly.I know there are tools for locking up to do the timing.....but I suppose that there must be a more refined method than the "two-big-blokes-with-a-jemmy-in-the-ring gear" procedure !

for undoing - long bar + socket on bolt and in turn bar on chassis leg remove stop solenoid wire in IP and turn engine over by starter, for tightening - torque wrench + socket engage 4th gear low box handbrake on - tighten, if car moves wedge foot brake pedal down
 
How do yu make summat 90mm dia and 70mm long?

Duh? Its a 3 dimensional object! Visualise it as a very thick washer, 90mm round and 70mm thick!

I know all about the starter motor trick but thats not the way i work, i want to be in full control all the time.

I know what the tool looks like but thats not good enough to reproduce it.

I am just looking for someone that knows the dimensions of a crank pulley to say whether the tool mneeds to be 70mm deep to fit or can it be less???

:doh: there is a significant difference between 70mm long and 70mm thick, or didnt they teach you anything at school?
In fact the tool is 405mm long! and only needs to be about 5mm thick!
 
whats wrong with removing the pulley and using this?

yu have to remove the pulley bolts anyway, just take it off. Saves a load of unnecessary trouble.

i just used some flat bar 2" x 12" long can't remember how thick it was though cut a piece out to go round the socket then 2 holes in it to bolt it to the pulley sorted

interesting but now i'm confused. I thought the ring was to go into the pulley recess to allow the four bolts to tighten up against the pulley face so the bolt can be undone.

I guess i'll have to go the slow way and build the tool while i'm in the middle of stripping down.

the one yu are thinking of is designed to be used with the pulley in place, but as you have to remove it anyway, just remove it first and then use flat stock :D.

I think yu will find that the pulley is held on with...... let me see.......

how about 4*8mm bolts mounted on a 75mmPCD at 90 degrees to each other ;).
