need some opinions please. I think the turbo on my 300tdi disco is making a noise. Sounds like an angry elephant whilst under load! I can rev it whilst stationary to 3000rpm and feel the pressure in the top turbo hose, but when going along it makes a heck of a racket! Tried to upload a video which shows the revs and the noise but mp4's not allowed!. Would be grateful for some opinions. As background, I tried to remove the turbo to replace a sheared manifold to downpipe stud, but couldn't get the turbo oil return pipe off the block (eventually removed the stud and replaced it in situ using a 10mm bolt grip). Then put the manifold and turbo back in place (did not separate the manifold and turbo). This started happening today straight after fixing the stud. Typical!

Thanks James, should have said that I checked all turbo and air hoses for tighness, all OK. They are newish silicone hoses, unless there is a small hole somewhere. It does sound like air whistling. I have managed to get with the 21st century and upload a youtube video, if anyone would care to take a look and listen, many thanks.

whats the performance like?
have you disturbed the pipe that connects the lda / boost enrichment thinggy on the inj pump to the turbo ( 'tee'd' into the waste-gate actuator's feed from the compressor housing)

Rich.

Performance is pretty good and better now the exhaust is not blowing at the manifold to down pipe. I did disturb the thin hose at the back of the turbo, but have checked that it is secure since this started. It's just the alarming noise under acceleration above 1700 rpm. It stops when backing off the throttle. I wondered if it was over boosting somehow? The silicone hoses are only 6 Months old. If it was the turbo, would it not make the same noise when revving the engine whilst parked?

needs to be under load to create real boost
have you got or have access to a 'boost' gauge or something to check that it's not overboosting?
also,
the inlet manifold gasket, they are sorta fragile, can leak / loose pressure from there o_O

Rich.
