I live in Bahrain and recently bought the below 1991 110 from a Sheikh.

In his words, he 'made it like bentley', which involved walnut dash and red vinyl trim...

I am resigned to keep this for the time being, as finding new dashboard bits appears tricky, and trying to dismantle it will probably destroy it.

Was the upright style of this dash ever standard, or has this been custom made? I haven't found any others which look like this yet..

Yep - swedish brothel etc...

Luckily rust is not to much of an issue here JC, as long as your not dropping boats in and out of the sea..

Anyone know if the upright dash was ever standard though? I've got an ac control switch which I haven't seen anywhere else, but it looks quite 'standard' (to the right of the wheel in the first pic)

i think there is a bog standard black dash under that brown facia. you should be able to unscrew it and throw it all away whilst still retaining the original dash. the red leather on the top will be tacked on probably but you will have to get a new instrument panel, that one is fooked.

i THINK... that the defender air con systems for hot climates look like that... so i would imagine that the walnut ****e would just peel off. Leaving an almost respectable, if sticky, normal AC dash.

I could be very wrong though.

if you look at the first pic you can see straight through the vents to a totally standard dash behind. defender aircon usually goes under the dash n takes up all the leg room.

nah but what i was sayin was that all that brown facia was stuck on top of a standard dash. the vents are part of the facia and they're not connected to anyting you can see straight through

WOW! Your landy dressed up for Halloween.
I have the same style dash with the air con and no opening fresh air vents, minus the sexy colors.
It is standard on those years that have a/c fitted.
I've seen a few of these on ECR's website (east coast rovers) where they restore north american spec defender, and rip out that dash and hvac system for the newer style.
Nothing unusual, except for the colors maybe.
Cheers
