I have just told a customer to buy the latest Rf box he lives in Worksop and was quoted for item number (YWY500170) £265 + vat...

Now anyone know if this has gone up in price as I remember it being no more than £165 + vat.

Anyone know where he can order it for the lower price?

i brought one last month from nottm stratstone £265 + vat as no one had them in stock, there on restricted request order only from land rover !

thats from someone i know there ! and no discount as they need your vin

Long time lurker here, but I'm more active over on Rangerovers.net..

This has also been brought up on RR.net in the following thread:

The updated RF receiver YWY500170 to solve battery drain - Page 2

And one of the guys has actually been in touch with JLR/TaTa about this. I don't know exactly the responses he's been getting - well other than what he's posted back into the thread - but it seems they are being somewhat dismissive...

I personally think that LR underestimated how big the problem was with the P38's and also how many of them were still out there being used - and have figured they can make even more cash out of owners, for something which in essence was a defect if you like, from the start..

Even £165 +VAT was extortionate for what looks to be a fairly simple receiver box. Apparently some models of the Disco II had the same kind of RF problems, and yet their newer receiver boxes are around £45+VAT... go figure!

The only reason I can think of that they would need your VIN number is if the new receivers were being coded to the vehicle - like the FOBs are - however, from looking at the RR.net thread, it doesn't look like there has been any update to the YWY500170 box that would require this.. The only other reason I can think of is so LR can see how big the issue is/record which vehicles have been 'updated' but if that were the case, then surely they should have been doing that from the start?

Cheers,
Marty

Exactly... so hence why do they suddenly want it now?

I was lucky (if you can call it that) to get one from Island 4x4 last year for about £157+VAT - which indeed was plug and play... 5 minutes work, for no more flat batteries!

The only non-simple bit in the YWY500170 unit is apparently a chip which can tell if it is a P38 code being transmitted (as opposed to just 'any' transmission like the earlier ones) - which if it is, it passes it on to the BECM and it wakes up and locks/unlocks car. If not a valid code, then ignores it and doesn't wake the BECM...

(almost like what they should have done in the first place?!)

The VIN is because JLR are making them one part per vehicle. If your new reciever fails you need to return it before a new part is released. They can only be ordered from JLR and mine is going to cost me near as makes no difference 280inc VAT. Currently the expected wait time is mid Oct although from what I was told all of that batch are already allocated. Lucky for me I am getting one of them.

Who gave you that story? The units aren't even made by Land Rover - they're made by Huf in Germany (their logo is printed on the PCB)... seems odd that a multi-million pound automotive manufacturer is doing units like this on a 'one by one' basis?

I'll mention it to the guy in the rr.net thread and see if he can ask LR in his next reply as to why they've gone that route, when obviously there are still a whole bunch of owners out here with these issues!

Call me a sceptic, but it sounds all too much like just another method for LR to keep making money out of us!

That is what I was told by the agent at my local LR dealer. True or not who knows.
Since the part was made 4 years after the release of the L322 every P38 had a bad reciever. I doubt a lot of owners ever changed the part.

But there has been a huge markup on the part so they are taking the **** a bit. But since it is now 11 years since the P38 went out of production LR do not have to make or supply parts for them anymore. As such they are free to take the ****.

Taking the **** a lot... :) I found a 2006 TSB, with regards to the issue of BECM causing battery drain - so LR were still recognising it as a problem 5 years after the last P38 rolled off the production line... and (I presume the P38 had a 3 year warranty?) a couple of years after the last one was out of warranty still - which to me says they should still stump up and sort it out!

I've attached the 2006 TSB for anyone interested..

good morning
I am at the moment dealing with the results of what i believe where a flat battery, maybe due to the r/f receiver (certainly an older version and i cannot be sure if i disconnect the blue wire as advised some time back) Just to ask is it possible to remove this item maybe join some wires together, and just use the key?

Regards Brian

No wires to join together, but unless you fancy entering the EKA code every time you will need diagnostics to disable the alarm or whatever in the BECM.

Hows that arrived at. Does the plastic case cost a tenner? :D:D
That's how much it would cost me to make them in small quantities, the stumbling block for the moment is the recognition code pre-programmed into one of the I.C's.
Mass production probably no more than a fiver including the case:mad:

You would wonder why the chinks have not seen an opportunity here or are the numbers not large enough for them to bother?

The Chinese are only interested in big volume, especially when it comes to electrical items. If they cant fill a container with 1 order it's not worth it for them.
We manufacture our products in China so i have much experience of this.

A mate of mine who owns a Rally preparation equipment business. Needed some special springs making for one of his new lines, he was quoted something like £4.00 each plus vat from a UK maker. With a minimum order quantity of 1000. He only initially needed 100. Got a 100 made in China with an all up cost to him of 20 p each. So it doesn't always work the way you say.
