incase anyone has the same symptoms, turned out the head gasket had failed, replaced gasket and thermostat, didn't get head skimmed as there was no warping of the head. now all is well and back on the road.:D

1998 300tdi, i have oil coming out of what looks like the cam follower guide locating screw, there are a couple of parts around the screw but i dont know what there called, but the oil is leaking from the end one nearest the back of the engine. the rest look ok. any ideas why this is leaking...
