300Tdi 1998 discovery. Ok so i just replaced the engine block in my discovery. Got a second hand block and swapped all the parts over of my block. When i started the engine there was a knocking sound coming from the flywheel area, (not that bad when idling) when i looked underneath there was alot of oil coming out of the drain plug on the bell housing. Have i done something wrong when i put it on???? just one quick note i did notice when looking through the hole where the starter motor was the flywheel looked like it was touching the housing but after turning the engine by hand the gap got bigger and it wasnt touching. Think ive done something wrong and now its f**ked the crankshaft oil seal. Any opinions are very welcome. Thanks.

Hi, was it a bare block or a short motor? If it was a bare block you may have left a thrust bearing out off the crankshaft as that would allow the flywheel to move fore and aft

the block came of a 1997 defender, same block, it had cam and crank shafts left in. i'll have to do some investigating when it stops raining. thanks for your reply.

This is what happened, the knocking sound or banging if you like, was because the main bearing end cap was only on hand tight and because i didn't change the T seals i didn't touch the bottom end of the block. Obviously the place i bought the block from checked the bearing before they sold it to me to make sure it was ok thats why the cap was loose. ALL MY OWN FAULT FOR NOT CHECKINK. The oil leak was because the sump got damaged by the end cap when i turned the engine on. Thought i would leave an update incase anyone is just as stupid as me (i doubt it). The moral of the story is ALWAYS CHECK YOUR NUTS.:frusty:
