I have a 300tdi disco 1998. Engine overheated and conked out. I let it cool and filled it up with water and managed to get it home. I checked it today and when I started the engine there is an instant build up in pressure in the expansion tank, it starts whistling like a kettle straight away. I took the cap of and there was a lot of bubbling and you can see smoke (exhaust gas) coming out the top. no water is coming out of the exhaust pipe. Is my head gasket gone or do you think the head itself is the problem. warped or cracked maybe????. any opinions guys. Thanks.

Could be either I guess. But the first step for either is to remove the head and have a look. Before you put it back together, clean out the inlet manifold and block off the egr.

I found a hose on the top of the engine at the back had blown, I think the pressure build up blew it that's why it lost all the water and over heated on the motorway. I fixed the hose and am not losing any water but the pressure with the expansion cap on is the same, and with the cap of I am still getting exhaust gas and lots of bubbles in the expansion tank??? EGR was removed a long time ago. thanks.

incase anyone has the same symptoms, turned out the head gasket had failed, replaced gasket and thermostat, didn't get head skimmed as there was no warping of the head. now all is well and back on the road.:D
