steering pump trouble

disco 1998 300tdi.when i turn the steering wheel i can hear a wining noise coming from the engine the steering gets heavy at times especialy when on full lock.i am gonna change it but can anyone tell me if it goes while i am driving it to the garage will i still be able to get it there.what i want to know is can i still move it if the pump goes.thanks

My serpentine belt broke a couple of miles from home and I managed to still drive it without the PAS pump running, but you need arms like Popeye

Its just very heavy and I only drove at low speed 20mph max
