brake lights have gone. removed drivers side cluster and the bulb had blown, the glass was white and it was cracked. the bulb holder was burned and had started to melt and the same part of the cluster itself had started to melt. any idea why this happened. the off side cluster is fine and bulbs are fine but doesn't work. reverse lights work on both sides and also brakelight in the rear door works. electrics is not my strong point. 98 disco 1. 300tdi.

If the bulbs filament breaks that's it, no light, but as it sometimes happens part of the broken filament temporary re-attaches so it get will very hot and burn for a fraction of a second or so and then blow due the low resistance of that bit of filament, hence the glass damage and the melted holder this type of short circuit could even have blown a fuse.
Have you ever heard of light bulbs exploding.
Disco rear lamp bulb holders are available if a replacement is required.

i'm gonna buy a cluster and bulb holder, and work from there. i still don't understand why the rear door brakelight works yet both nearside and offside brakelights in the clusters dont. i hate electrics. thanks for the help discool.
