What primer do i use on aluminium

Thanks, @Turboman - I guessed as much. I just started by getting flaky stuff off and then, in true ‘5 minute landrover job’ it all kinda spiralled out of control. Last paint job has been on and untouched for 12 years, so it was always going to be more than just a touch-up. Advice much appreciated.

What primer do i use on aluminium

Does the Hammerite special metals primer lift existing paint like some etch primers, or can it be used in localised areas of bear metal on body panels. Reason I ask is that have been stripping back to bare metal, but some areas are resisting my efforts - if I can apply directly to the bare...

    Axle identification

Evening all. I've got spare axle sat in the shed that I was given a few years ago as part of a garage clear out. It's from a series. How do I tell if its from a swb or lwb, front or back? Is there a difference? It's in top condition. Also has diff and complete hubs. Thinking about getting...

Thats a really nice job, James. Fair play to you. You should be rightly proud of the work you've done there.

    Rippling hammerite

Evenin All. Hammerite problem Afternoon All! Decided that the multiple-colour, interspersed with rust and knocks, look was a bit sore on the eyes - had a couple of years like this now. So, decided to paint it myself as can't afford to pay an expert. Anyway, decided to hammerite it (I...

    New website of my 109

What colour Red is that on Vicky? I'm going to do a repaint this summer - my idea is original marine blue with white truck cab roof - missus wants red. Now, to honest i hate red on a vehicle, but have to say that red looks the business - i may be moving over to the 'Dark Side'.

    Sump Leak

Cheers Steve - i tend to call it the 'Animal' when in company - sounds more macho - only in my head is it the 'heap' - usually thought of semi-affectionately until the next thing goes wrong..... TruckCab, appreciate the post - thanks. I'll give the tile a go when i get the thing up on the...

    Sump Leak

Yep, good luck with it Herbie. I'm going to try all the stuff recommended above, then get a cork gasket and see how it goes. Steve, I fear there are many bruised knuckles and much foul language to get through before my heap is leak free. But i live in hope. :D

    Sump Leak

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen - much appreciated. I must admit, that i have yet to have a thorough inspection above the sump - i just saw the oil, had a quick look, saw oil dripping from bolts, got totally diheartened and walked away. Thought this was the best course of action as i had a...

    Sump Leak

Morning all, as part of the ongoing work to sort out all the various leaks I have now replaced the sump gasket twice and still the flipping thing is leaking. The gasket was replaced originally as part of a general overhaul, and was fine for about 500 miles when it started to leak, so i...

    rear diff filler plug

Cheers, Truckcab. Apparently, according to the wife, if i had dropped it on my head there would be less damage done than dropping it on any other part of the body!!!!!!!

    rear diff filler plug

Thanks all for the advice - really very much appreciated. In the end i've decided on the drill and tap method. Yesterday the diff was removed (Jaysus they are heavy when your lying on your back under the landrover) and new filler plug created with felt washers. Today, I'm coming to the...

    rear diff filler plug

yup - its the clamp around type. From what you say, MHM, I don't think i'll bother with it after all. Thanks for that - one less job to do. I'm all for that.

    rear diff filler plug

Thanks for the replies Chaps - much appreciated. It doesn't get used in anger off road, just a bit of field work collecting timber and other bits and pieces, so serious protection of the diff is not really an issue. That said, I got given a diff guard from a ninety yesterday (pick it up on...

    rear diff filler plug

Cheers for the ideas, Dr P. Think i'll go the easy route, though. Especially as i've been meaning to do this now for over 6 months.

    rear diff filler plug

Cheers for the reply, Dave. been over every millimeter of the thing - theres no filler plug anywhere. think i've got a combination of mongrel parts - later diff and earlier axle case or visa-versa. So, its either source a diff with filler plug, or likewise for axle case (not going to...

    rear diff filler plug

I have a 1983 series 3 swb. Its had some work done on it, which i am slowly having to redo for one reason or an other (fool and his money and all that).
