    Hi James,
Sorry to come straight to you but your advice has always been sound.
Can you look at my thread 'game over for my head' in the defender section and tell me what you think.
    Cheers

Hi I hope you don't mind the direct approach but I know you know what you are talking about due to stuff you have advised me on before. I'm planning on doing my first service on the old girl and wanted to check what you would advise on fluids.
It's a 91 200tdi defender and I am asking specifically on engine oil, transfer box and gearbox oils, and diffs. What should I be using?
    Thanks James
Hello I was wondering if you could give me some advice on opening trade accounts with britpart and bearmach. I have a small business selling second hand parts and would like to add some sercice parts to our inventory. Was hoping to get an idea of various companies minimum requirements before I contact them, forewarned is forearmed as they say. Any help would be much appreciated
James...following on from my thread about the suspect gearbox, is this the kind of thing you'd be interested in rebuiding? Just trying to weight up my options between getting mine rebuilt or just sourcing an exchange unit...
    Hi James,

I read on one of the forum threads that you might be the man to speak to about reconditioning an engine? I'm picking up a defender 200tdi with 96k on the clock - Is it something you would take on? Do message me with more details on pricing etc if it is - cheers.

I am still finding my feet on this site and my way around posting. You mentioned a fix to the fifth gear baulk ring and I was wondering if you could expand or point me in the right direction. I had replied on the previous original post with a sitrep but not sure how the system works and if you got it of not. Very much appreciate your time and experience on this one

My mum is coming over from the UK to visit, and I have to be able top use my rangy while she is here -- so I need to know if the rangy will be ok to drive until I can get her back into the shop to rectify any internal box issues -- if they exist.
    Hello, Sir!

I have just switched an LT95 gearbox. The guy whom I bough the replacement from tells me the box was in working condition. However, after the install, there is no first gear. We did fit an overdrive unit, but we have fitted overdrives before.

The first gear position can be engaged, but there is no drive -- all the other gears are fine.
There is some slight noise from the gearbox in neutral or in first. The noise is slightly 'rougher' when in first, and if the gear lever is pushed, it sounds like the gear fork is *just* selecting the syncro and the gear is rubbing up along the face of the syncro.

Question: has the main shaft been pushed forward slightly, or is it possible for the remote (gear lever) to be fitted poorly such that the fork does not push the gear far enough into mesh?

Final question, If the main shaft has been pushed forwards and the thrust washers have dropped into the step, can I still drive it safely until I can pull it apart again?
