    James,
I have at last got around to resealing the PAS box.Sector shaft was only slightly pitted, fitted a Redi Sleeve anyway, unfortunately could not then fit the shaft through the needle roller bearings. So removed the sleeve.Pushing ahead with another polishing of the shaft, checking the endfloat/resistance,it all fitted together fine until I tried turning the input shaft lock to lock....all smooth until on RH lock, seemed to go over the two turns from centre, and jammed.Only able to release it by rocking the sector shaft.Pulled it all apart[several times]everything appears as it should.Sector shaft centre gear tooth is central on the centre pitch of the rack and the follower is on the centre of the worm.Looking at it all before the cover goes on it looks correct but obviously is not as something is allowing it to go off track when turned to the right.
Have you ever run into this occurence when rebuilding your PAS boxes?Any ideas where I have gone wrong?
    Thanks for your help.

    Geoff
Should hopefully get new box this morning, tnt dropped the first one off a pallet and cracked the casing, so sourced another one at tnt's expense. Good news is I'll have a spare viscous if mine packs in! Should hopefully put it in this afternoon after work, haven't got a transmission jack this time though and I'm pretty worried about doing it with a trolley jack!

Glad the td5 went well! Fingers crossed mine does too!
    Hi James

Well I managed to motivate myself enough to pull the LH head (EAS side) off this morning. As I suspected all my valve seals looked perfect. That said the inlet valve at the very back was soaking in oil on the manifold side rather than the piston side (hope that makes sense).
I began trying to check for wear between the valve stems and valve guide and I noticed that the same inlet valve has a little resistance about halfway up when inserting it. You can push past this and you dont feel the resistance any more but it does not clear the top (where the oil seal would go) cleanly. I tried the same valve in different ports and it is the same. A different valve in this port goes in with no resistance.

I will get a new valve tomorrow but would this be enough to cause my smoke burn? Also would any warp get worse when the engine warmed up? If so would this explain why I got no smoke for the first 10 mins after the last rebuild.

    Many thanks again.

    John
At the end of there comment in bottom right it says quote click that and it will come up with there message in the box.

hi James, as you know even though my Freelander diff has had all bearings changed it's still got a low growl/wob sound coming from it. would you recommend changing crown and pinion or is it best to buy a new diff?
thanks for any help-I can't find a diagram or strip down of the TVK000180 diff anywhere! :)
sea palling isnt to bad a place to come to. i think its £10 to get out and in. there are a few other spots but it depends on what you doing ie fishing or speed boat for fun
Started gearbox. Got syncro and 5th off eventually. The shaft that 5th sits in is very loose in the box behind. There is probably about 1-2mm play either way. The tapered roller bearing does not touch its bearing face. Is this much play how it shouild be or should it be tight to bearing surface. Syncro parts etc look OK.... Just a reminder.... it would not go into 5th unless engione speed just right.
Yeh found a pic on the net not gona be an easy challange as I started it in my driveway. I do need a conrod as it looks like I've bent 1 when I filled the engine with water. That's why I need it apart if you want to let me know what you want for a rod would be nice cheers steve
