You've nailed it and unfortunately a lot of bods get that way and also their cars.....
Not miles per gallon but smiles per gallon and mine is the most economical car I've ever enjoyed
Deffo Mark and to be fair if they are looked after and driven sensible they will return a decent power to weight ratio MPG figure just as any car will TBF. Just makes me laugh also when chaps have to ask the wife FIRST before they buy too!!! WTF is that all about. LOL. For a laugh last week i drove my Rolls in to the Swindon Landy main dealer and went inside to look at the new model Range Rover. They were all over me like a bad rash and after looking over one for about 30 mins i was asked if i was interested in one and i replied " Nahhh, i prefer my Rolls Royce " and walked out. LOL

thks as I spat my tea out laughing , that was brilliant u doing that , hats off to u :):)

Plus 1 with regards to if there looked after , also if not familiar with the vehicle is to either have it inspected or someone who does know them very well , see so many people buy vehicles that were 80k + when new and then try and run them on a shoestring

must confess I keep looking at the RRS 4.4 petrol but reading many are saying the later ones that have the 8 x speed ZF and the 5 x litre are better , D4 5 x litre are silly money so out my price range , for years I keep having that V8 itch , in an ideal world would like a FFRR but insurance is a killer

think the ones after 2011 are supposed to be the best out of the RRS range , however some of my big concerns are the hydraulic anti roll bars , then the timing chain tensioners

will also be interesting to see as fuel prices rise if the big V8 will start to drop in price , think that’s another reason I’m going to wait

I’ve got a 2014 4.4 TDV8. Absolutely love it. On last autumns NC
500 trip we did a total of 1200 miles door to door as spent week prior to the NC500 around Elgin & Grantown on Spey. Got an average of 36 mph. Much less pootling around town but I tend to use the RR for journeys the Defender would be unbearable for! Generally that’s anything over 2 hour

hi

may i ask is that a RRS sport , if so is it the L494 plse , must admit I wouldn’t be able to stretch to that , see the earlier ones u can have the 3.6 TDV8 or the petrol 4.4 V8;, alas don’t know what the 3.6 is like , but would go for a petrol anyway , either a 4,4 or later 5 litre that comes with a 8 x speed box , also really need to see if values start to fall because of the fuel situation

Hope u didn’t mind me asking , Many thks

Ok, Thanks for replies , I already run a L322 diesel and getting probably around 21 on short runs with no problems at all in last 5 years but spotted the 4.4.
Just wanted to know the real owners figures and not what the manufacturers claimed.

If you are running an L322 on diesel and only get 21mpg , you either have a heavy right foot, or live in hilly/winding/stop start territory. Convert that to 4.4V8 and you will get a lot less.
This is taken from having an L322 diesel, and previously having a 4.0l V8 Disco. The L322 gives 27mpg , normal roads. It gives 17.4 approx, over mountainous/winding/stupid tourists roads. The V8 Disco gave 12mpg on normal roads, and down to 6mpg on the mountain roads.
However, I will add, as others have said, these are not beasties where mpg should be a buying consideration. Unless it is to discount it when choosing what to buy.

The 8 speed box is a real gem and makes a world of difference albeit too needs its oil changing as per the book for longevity. The road tax is a killer on the m all TBH and personally i would not touch a RR sport. Don't like them, far too chavvy for me. The traditional shape is best. I also fitted a pair of K&N air filters in my L405 and it did make a difference of an extra 3 mpg on a long run.
I will say again if they have not got a full and detailed service history and low owners on the V5c then walk away or it will end in tears or a divorce. Unless you have at least a 5k emergency reserve too then do not bother. These cars are not cheap.
If you love a V8 go and try a nice Bentley Turbo R. Awesome cars and not expensive to run either these days. I am now on my 3rd Bentley/Rolls Royce now. Great cars. That will cure your V8 itch for sure. LOL.

many thks , alas its just making that decision on what will be a good replacement for my D3 , good call regarding the emergency fund , have a sort of one for my D3 , indeed know what u mean , they can become money pits like a D3 , would really like a FFRR but many are group 49-50 , spoken to my insurance is great detail and they say that some companies require a tracker to be fitted , don’t know how much it brings the polices down by having a tracker

decision wise it’s just me as I’m a widower, good call ref service record , indeed always ask for things like that including how many previous owners , suppose the reason I’m heading towards a RRS is it’s so similar to my current D3 and know them extremely well

Plus the next couple of years I intend to move so maybe the area will be cheaper than where I’m currently at

oh wow, I bet that’s incredibly nice to drive , must confess the D3 is my first vehicle to have air suspension and that’s very comfortable, so imagine ur Bentley is whisper quiet down the motorways

know what u mean ref RRS being chavvy , however with all the daft body kits and low profile tyre removed they don’t look too bad, in black , rock sliders , must confess never thought I would ever consider one but there isn’t really too much out there as a replacement , 5 x litre D4 would be very nice but seeing there jap imports range around 35k , so that’s out

hopefully the current diagnostics will also be adaptable , have a gap iid, carly , Autel Ap200 ,

unless of course there’s the Volvo XC90 , don’t like BMW’s ,

thks again for the great info as that’s very helpful

I've a client with a D4 3.0tdv6, it's a bloody nice car, scary and complicated but nice.

must confess would never buy another disco that has the TDV6 engine, don’t get me wrong my current D3 is extremely comfortable and very nice to drive , it’s always having that ticking time bomb under the bonnet

Sorry did mean he has a 5.0 V8 plse , as that would certainly be a dream motor for me , but unfortunately way out of my budget , cheapest I’ve seen is around 30k and not widely available seeing there jap imports

think engine wise for the 5.0 litre the main issues are timing chain / tensioners , also the same I believe with the 4.4 jag petrol engine in the earlier D3’s

Of course another dream motor would be a new defender but that won’t be for many years until they dramatically drop in price , will also be interesting to see what faults develop as in engine issues etc

At the end of the day don’t think I’ll ever own a FFRR , mainly due to the high insurance group, maybe it will change by moving to a cheaper post code ? , suppose the RRS is that sort of inbetween of the D3 and the FFRR , plus around 10 x groups down

Thks as always

Even if I had the cash, I would not buy any of the modern stuff, despite spending over 50 years in electronics, I don't want a mobile fecking Xbox with glowing screens and unreliable electronics. I don't want thief's delight keyless entry, I'm still able to open a tailgate without motor assistance etc etc. I want a car, a means of transport that is reliable and reasonably economical, I am not alone, second hand pre gizmo car sales are booming.

Plus 1 , particularly with u having such a deep understanding of electronics , as u say regarding keyless entry, ie, discovery 4 being able to be nicked within 30 x seconds , then another pet hate is why they thought doing away with a physical engine dipstick was a good idea

will be very interesting as time goes by to see how the new defender is for reliability, seeing they have some 50 x plus Ecus

Hi,
I,m just contemplating purchasing a 4.4 vogue 2014 reg, and was wondering what are peoples real experiences with fuel economy My journeys are mostly short trips of say 2 miles with a max being 10. Its a diesel but not sure which auto box. 53k miles. Thankyou for any replies.
No modern diesel of any marque or vehicle type will like that sort of driving. Its the wrong fuel.

I agree 101% Keith, if I was in the position I'd rent and swap over every two or three years. For me the 38' is enough of a 4x4 and family cruiser, camper, van and tow truck.
The modern cars are amazing but not on my income :)

The real new Defender is the Grenadier:) The JLR new Defender is actually a disco replacement IMO.
