Hi
Was talking TD5's with a mate and he suggested I get a EGR kit, stick a K&N air filter in and service my engine with 5w30 oil. I'm not an engine man and I don't entirely trust him but he reckoned it would be like driving a totally different truck? So what's the deal? What will make the difference and what won't? Don't mind chucking money at it but only if it will make a difference. Cheers,

De - EGR won't affect the MOT as it's for nitrous oxide emissions which are not yet checked as part of the test, but as stated earlier, keep it safe just in case it has to be refitted.
Mine has been de - EGR'd along with a straight through exhaust pipe to replace the centre silencer and the flat spot that's an annoying trait of most TD5s has disappeared, it's much more driveable and fuel economy has improved greatly.
The other advantage from removing the EGR is that all that exhaust gas and soot isn't being put back into the engine so the engine oil should stay cleaner for longer ;)

5w30 semi cynthetic oil is normal for td5 service
k/n filter gives a little more air and never needs replaced just cleaned
egr removal is ok and easy to do you can blank of manifold with £2.50 plate of ebay disconect vacum pipes on top of egr and block with self taper screws or buy full kit and remove egr up to you

You can cut a bean tin to make a blanking plate that slips between the manifold and the EGR take off pipe. No MOT mech will ever spot it. Total cost nothing and easily reversible. You still have the restriction in the inlet manifold from the EGR valve though.

can any one tell me the best way to remoive the egr valve and fit a bypass kit on my defender td5 05 model

Have a look here for a generic example:
www.alivetuning.com/docs/EGR%20bypass%20kit.pdf

It might look difficult but it isn't.
Just don't disconnect the vac pipes at the modulators unless you know what you are doing or you might end up with no brakes......and watch out for the silly allen key bolts cos they can snap. Use lots of penetrating oil days before you do the job.

I found no massive performance changes except the vehicle seems to have more torque at low Revs. Eg I can accelerate from 25mph in 5th gear.....not quickly, but it does it without kangooring....

Diagnosis needed please:

2002 TD5 Discovery with c. 82K on the clock and power upgrade by last (first) owner, very quick and economical but irritatingly noisy with accompanying engine vibration. Noise a bit like an ancillary bearing, but doesn't have that grinding edge to it, more of a deep bussing. It also has the tendency to lurch from stop-go at low revs, as if something in the fuel system is sticking. Several mechanics have pronounced it OK but it isn't as smooth or quiet as my last one.

Could it be a stuck EGR valve or a clogged inlet manifold ?

HI rus why not have a look inside it then check hoses to turbo /vac hoses air flow /air filter when was last service has it had injector seal replaced is there oil in ecu red plug have a google around for your simptoms . then come back with your own post saying what youve tried and what probs you have someone on here may be able to help

Hey all, planning to do this myself in a few weeks. Thought I should get some new bolts for the blanking plates in case mine are knackered. My Disco is my day car as well so would rather be safe than sorry. Anyone know what size they are so I can order them with the kit?

Cheers

Doug

Got mine from Alive tuning. Did come with new allen bolts. Yes, mine would not shift, ended up taking off the exhaust manifold and grinding the heads off. The remaining tails unscrewed on the bench vice.
