If you remove it, it will stop your engine breathing dirty exhausts fumes, instead of clean air. Benfits may or maynot be noticed. Either way it will be better for your engine.

i had a leak on my TD5 recently. It was the coolant hose which goes into the heater matrix box at the top of the engine, passanger side. The hose closest the the bulkhead. Not sure if its the inlet or outlet. The only way i found it was by taking the bonnet off to look down behind. My clue...
