All,

Anyone have any experience with the single din fold out head units.

Was thinking about putting one in my Defender. Possibly hook up a reversing camera to it as well as other things.

Not sure how robust they are though? Does anyone know if they last well with all the folding in and out etc.

Its either that, or possibly attack the dash and make a mofification to fit a double din, but a single din would be much easier.

Also has anyone fitted a fold out one to a later TD5 Dash? Is there still enough space to engage 1,3 5th gears with it out?

Cheers

i got one in my p38. only had it in since nov, bus seems ok. my misses got it for my birthday last year, but it wouldnt fit my old jeep. the screen comes out about an inch from the front of the unit. need a bit of space for it to come straight out then flip up. you dint have to have it open all the time. mine dont support reversing camera, but im thinking of just getting one from maplins for £50 odd. if you want i can get you some pics of it, wont be until thursday as got get my misses to show me how, or can send them on my phone ( i think). The screen is adjustable to the angle. they do have a safety cut off that supposed to be wired to hand brake. just bung it on a neutral and dvds will play while moving. not legal mind, but i have music vids in mine, do just close screen and listen

cheers for that mate, Yeah i stupidly forgot it needs space to open. I doubt it would open if i was in 1,3,5th gear.

I was just a bit worried how robust they are. Do they wobble at all then you press them, or when your drivivng along.

Do you have yours out most of the time?

no mine closed 99%time. especially if im on my own it off. i like the v8 rumble.it dont seem to wobble whem driving.the screen is touch screen, but also got a remote with mine, plus the main stereo controls are still on the main unit. when had a play with the settings get a pretty good sound out of it, well thet was tested with irom maiden lol. mine is a ripspeed from halfords. the bonus is they will fit it, as the unit is actually serewed to the cradle. mine only got 3 screws as i dropped 1. there a lot of wires on the back. can have 2 extra screens, great if got kids, an audio input and a mass to the iso connecter. I got take mine out next week to wire in my ipod thing. so if want pics can send you some. mine clears the cear shift when it in park, but you still get the same prob as do with sat nav in bright sun cant see it very well

ok cheers for that mate. I might just got for a decent headunit with the built in bluetooth. I doubt very much if it would fit properly.

If anyone does have a fold out headunit in a Defender TD5, i would love to see a pic

:)

Got 1 in mine had it 2 years now so swap it from car to car, the ones with builtin bluetooth TV DVD are the better ones to get, they have loads of output/input connectors for extra screens cameras etc.

Bought mine from eBay £145, the only thing id say bad about them is the radio reception is a bit poor. could be just my unit as with the last 3 cars its been in its been crap with the radio.

Im guessing yours is in a Disco though. Still not sure if it would fit and work in a defender.

iv had 2 ripspeed dvd players from halfords in the past and had problems with both. one lost all volume and the other every time i turn the car on the volume come on full

my radio reception bit crappy too, but then again dont listen to radio much, usualy have cd on, so not too much of an issue to me.

you can get these systems now on ebay for £137 inc delivery etc, i put 1 in my girlfriends car and its great, wire the handbrake wire directly to the earth wire of the system to get the screen working on the move if you want, heres the link to them on ebay XTRONS D708 7" Touch Screen in Car DVD player RDS TV on eBay (end time 05-Feb-11 07:20:00 GMT)
radio signal and all other stuff excellant, only thing i will say is that because it comes from japan theres no detachable front panel for security so make sure the screen is always away when the cars left anywhere
